What happens to rising junior SAs at the end of the summer? It's kind of a strange position because sophomore's generally aren't up for FT offers. Are you just extended another SA offer right then and there for the same bank? Or is it pretty much "thanks for your help this summer. Remember to apply online again!" I figured you'd at least get some kind of guaranteed interview for an junior-year internship.

If they do a good job they get a Summer Analyst offer for their junior year.
That's what happened when I was a sophomore SA and that is what generally happens across the street.
It makes no sense for them to spend all that money on you just to say "Thanks for the help."
If he or she does a good job, why not give the kid a junior SA offer rather than roll the dice with some kid you think MAY be good during on-campus recruiting?
you get a offer to return

What the hell are you talking about? Maybe that's your case, but not for most of the people on WSO.

No. Actually, I know all of the rising juniors in my business school who attained a summer BB IBD offer. I find that the most successful people are the ones from middle-class families. Kids from wealthy families, in my experience, have bettern finance experience in high school, but end up with only that - their high school level placements.
As for my firm, we extend full-time offers for sophomores who perform well.
