Strange Dilemma - Advice Needed

What's up yall? I've sporadically checked WSO in the past for help with coverletters, resume advice, opinions on market trends, etc... but this is my first time posting with a couple questions.

Background: Im a junior at an Ivy League target (but not HYP).

For summer internships, my school conducts resume drops in late January and interviews in early February, but our online resume drop slots have already been opened online. I have around a 3.5 GPA right now, 3.6 Econ major GPA, but I bombed an intermediate finance course this past term (terrible finals schedule, family issues, and inexcusably poor study skills on my part) which will drop my GPA and major GPA a bit (GPA to 3.4, major GPA to 3.2). So my plan to avoid showing this drop in my apps is to submit all my resumes and CVs to all of the recruiting firms before my final grades for courses are submitted to the school and officially incorporated into my GPA. Also, some firms require an unofficial transcript and I assume it won't look very good to have a crappy grade in a finance course...

BUT, I have a full-time internship at a big-name, prestigious hedge fund this winter that I want to include on my resume and in my CLs.

Should I...
1) Sumbit apps now and briefly mention (1-2 lines in resume and in CVs) that I will have the HF internship this winter and put down an approximation of my duties as an intern
2) Wait until I start working there in mid-January and can better explain my role at the firm but have a noticeably lower GPA and major GPA

Thanks in advance for opinions.

Keep your good GPA, put down 1-2 lines about your duties at the HF. Adjust accordingly in January. That's my vote and I think its fine and will give you the best chance at interviews. Good Luck dude.

Assuming you know what to put down about your winter internship now and posting your resume up now - then definitely do the good GPA. If you are going to add the experience afterward, you wouldn't have the excuse of putting your good GPA as grades are not posted.

im in a similar situation in that my gpa will be bumped down a notch after this quarter. i am also applying everywhere i can right now before my transcript reflects this decrease. lets say i get an interview with one of these firms im applying to now, is it necessary to correct them in an interview if they say "Oh so you have a 3.5 at target?" am i supposed to be like "Actually its a 3.4 now."

That's tough. I still think you should be honest because they will do background checks.

When I did summer interviews last winter I did them on campus. if you are off campus can you manage coming back?

This is a tough question. Companies can see the date of application. If they reference that with the date on your transcript this could be a problem. Safest bet is to be honest I would think.

But, companies usually do not check transcripts for grades until a semester after an offer is given (at least this has been my experience). So focus on making all As this next semester to boost your GPA. Just pray they don't calculate your GPA as of the end of the current semester.

Anyway...good luck.

Phoenix: At my school, if you are off campus during the winter for recruiting, firms conduct phone interviews with you and/or invite you to their offices for face-to-face interviews.

IBchimp: An unofficial transcript in this case is a MS word document made by the applicant (me) which has all of the classes and grades received. It is not an unofficial transcript sent by the school.

Thanks for all of your input. My final grades won't be "official" until Friday, so my plan is to submit as many of my apps as I can before then with my GPA excluding my fall classes. And then if I submit any apps after that I will update with the lower GPA so as to incorporate my fall classes. This is the best solution I think and eliminates any official/traceable wrongdoing on my part. Or at the very least, it assuages my conscience.

ms neither drug tests summers nor asks for their transcripts. when you sign on full time, however, you do get checked. i'd be interested to hear what the policy is like at other firms.

i personally think people tend to worry too much about this kind of shit. so long as you aren't off by some absurd margin (i.e. listing a 3.5 when you've actually got a 2.4), you'll be fine. focus on perfecting your interview skills and having an intuitive understanding of the basic finance and accounting concepts.

Are your resumes still reviewed in the same pool as on campus students? Meaning do alums from your school look at your app still? it seems like it would be harder to apply off campus?

And yes I think your plan sounds good

The plan of mentioning this HF internship sounds good; I wouldn't worry to much, it sounds like you will be fine. Also, I would put down strategy you are working on, at that HF, (I am assuming you are recruiting for buyside full-time, not sellside?) because that is what ultimately matters to your interviewers. Let me know if you need more help
