Using optional essay to explain low grades in Math - MSF Applicant.
Hi guys,
I'm an international (Computer Science major), in the process of applying for MSF programs. My grades during the first year of undergrad were pretty bad(especially Math, barely passed in the first sem). Overall though, I did alright (GPA~3.5). GRE is 328(Q:168)
Since these programs weigh Math undergrad scores pretty highly, I was wondering if it's a good idea writing an optional essay about it.
Reasons:
1. My sister got married around the time of first sem mid terms and I ended up missing some of them. Failed English, retook it next time and scored more than double (38 -> 78 out of 100). Kinda wish I failed Math too so possibly could show similar improvements!
2. Didn't like the subjects I was studying at all. Found them useless and did an ethical hacking course instead.
3. Didn't care to study at all. Got into a relationship at the time, so that made things worse.
I understand there is nothing substantial that I can talk about but just need to know your take on this. Would you address this in a genuine way admitting your faults OR just not mention it hoping they consider it a minor hiccup and let it go?
Thanks!
I don't know the general MSF process, or how competitive your GPA is relatively, but all things equal, 3.5 doesn't sound that bad. But more to the point, I don't think it's a good idea to use the essay to list excuses. I think it's better to focus on the positives and why you're a good candidate now, not why you feel you made mistakes in the past.
I'm not saying you can't mention some struggles in a more subtle manner, but don't use the essay to say "here's why my grades are lower."
GPA is fine and I support using the optional essay to explain the math scores. Adcoms will appreciate the transparency.
a 168 Quant on the GMAT? And a 3.5 in CS?
Buddy, no one cares about some math classes with those numbers. Don't draw attention to it.
