What does "leading with the balance sheet" mean?
I was talking with a banker and he said his bank definitely leads with the balance sheet.
What exactly does this mean?

Career Resources
RBC. It means they don't take excessive risk... or so they say. Put it another way it means they're way smarter than everyone else because they're not global but regional, and therefore are better at what they do.
It means that they make a lot of their money through functions that you need a big balance sheet to conduct: syndications/leveraged finance, fixed income stuff, etc. They win a lot of business because they can provide a full suite of resources for companies to use. Compare that to a smaller shop, who doesn't have a huge balance sheet and thus makes their money via the advisory side of the business.
They pull their business by lending to the company first. The company in turn gives them i-banking fees in order for the relationship to be profitable for the bank.
What SECfinance said..they can make loans to the firms they advise if needed, or they can use their syndicate desk to help with distribution of new securities. Think of what MS and those banks were able to do with facebook shares
I think G.M. was replying to the wrong thread.
