What should i do? I am pathetic
Hi guys, I am pathetic. I know I shouldn't be so negative about myself but compared to everyone on this forum, i am a peon. I graduated in 07 from a state school. I don't have any banking internship experience, but I did have some marketing internship experience. My GPA is average (3.5) not high for Business major anyway. Besides English, I also speak Mandarin fluently. Since graduation, the job that i've had were all temporary placements. Other than that I don't have much going on. I've always hoped that these temporary placements would develop into something better, but it hasn't happened, and at this point in time I am positive it never will. The first temp position could have lead to a full time position. It was for a business analyst position. Although I was offered the position, I didn't fit with the culture of the company. Even though the people were nice and friendly, the job it was extremely slow-paced, mundane, and boring. Even 2 of my co-worker told me that the place was good place to work but not if you're planning to go somewhere. So, I left. After that, I temp-ed at a BB back office in operations. It was actually a project so after the project was done, i left. I really don't know what i should do at this point... Should I just give up?
I would like very much to at least get some sort of internship for grads. Do they do that? Also, would it be too much for someone like me to seek an analyst training program at some boutique? If its not a far-fetched dream, which boutiques in nyc should i look up? Thanks
most ppl are prolly gonna tell you to get an FT job..stay there for a few years...get into a top mba program...and get into banking after b-school

good luck.
Why would you get so down on yourself? You're not pathetic at all, you've just not had as many opportunities as a lot of people on here. Do your best to get as relevant a FT job as you can, stick at it, and try to go the MBA/F500 route.
Look for a job wear you will be learning and building a strong skill set. Banks are ridiculously difficult to get in, even for those of us with our 7 in the bag. Spend 2-3 years in a role that you grow a lot in, go to B-school and then try to enter banking.
If all you have done is temp since graduation you have to get your career in order. With this job market hiring is extremely tight; I would direct my search not just to banks but also F500 companies. Try and look into roles like FP&A or something that is finance oriented if you want to head into that route. Right now MBA would be your best bet if you want to do banking but you need solid experience first to get in.
?
I am in NYC, though the opportunities are plentiful, the competitions are fierce and brutal. That's why i feel like i won't get anything. Forgot to say this though, while at the BB operation back office, i spoke with one of the junior analysts that was there. He was in the training program. Although he carried himself pretty well, work ethic wise, he did not appear to have the traits that most BB banks look for. For example, he would swing by where the temps worked and just sit there and chat with us. He admitted plenty of times that he didn't want to go back to his station because he didn't feel like working. He'd hang for around an hour or so before going back to his station. O man... that really bothered me. There's more about him though but discussing it further would not get me any job so i'll just leave it at that. Some people should just learn to appreciate their job more.
u r pathetic, kill urself. is that what you want to hear?
ni mei yo chu shi. be a fucking man
what is it that you really want? I'm no expert on banking, only an aspiring monkey - but to me it seems that what you're looking for is pity more than advice. I'm sure that by reading threads and browsing through forums you've already figured out that you should try to go the BSchool way if you didn't get it first time around, and you should also know that temp experience will not get you in any respectable institution. So grow a pair, go out there and get a full time job, go to NYU, join Goldman and become a superstar. If that's what you really want, that is...
Freebanker and Youngmonkey: I am not seeking for your rude comment(mandarin) or pity, rather, I am trying to figure out if i should just give up applying. The point is that I have tried to get into this industry, but failed so far. I am just trying to look for advice on how to get into this industry. If you've guys read the last paragraph carefully, you'd know I am actually trying to seek advice. The 1st paragraph is just to give a summary of who i am: a noone compared to the elitist in most banks. I just want to know if someone like me would be able to manage to get into a boutique. And basically what I should do at this point. Give up and get some other job in another industry then get into business school or keep trying. Ideally, i'd like get into an analyst program and then get an MBA degree after the program.
Freebanker: If i don't have chu shi like you said, then would i even bother working? Let me tell you how much chu shi i have. While at the BB bank i worked 10 hrs most of the time not counting lunch. Not often but a few times I worked in the office during the weekends. I've even worked a few times during national holidays. I don't want you to think i am complaining, its just in defense of what you said about chu shi.
