what to say to analyst/associate/DM

so say you've applied for a FT position and you figure out an alum is currently working (either at analyst/associate/dm level) at the firm. can someone give me some advice on what to say in terms of networking. obviously the goal would be to have them relay your resume to HR or get it in the right hands, but was wondering if someone could elaborate on what exactly my message would contain? thanks

Probably unnecessary to list all the possible roles at a bank. Anyways, I would use it and treat it the same as any other networking opportunity, but in the email you send out mention you have already applied for the position, or when you are talking to them at the end of the conversation say you have already applied and do they have any more advice/suggestions. 9/10 they will either put you in touch with HR directly (works as a referral) or say something to help you with HR

so you would send the exact same thing to a 1st or 2nd year analyst as you would a MD?

More or less. Say I applied for a position at BAML. I then reached out to a 2nd year analyst and an MD. Both emails would say something that included the following:

  • I applied for the position -I'm very interested in the firm -Was hoping to speak with you to learn more about your experience -Also wanted to get any suggestions you might have in terms of pursuing opportunities

Once the phone call was set up I would use it primarily as an 'informational interview' as many of you refer to it. Honestly the only thing I would do different if I had already applied was tell them that at the end and ask if they had any further suggestions/advice for me.
