skyy89: can it happen before
can it happen before january
I will be abroad after january.
Is it all phone or do they fly you in? If I tell them I will be abroad, will the difficulty associated with interviewing me cause them to reject me on that alone?
Do you want the job?
Be where they want you to be, when they want you to be there. Go in person. Do not try to make an investment bank's recruiting schedule fit your busy life.

^This. But also a lot of banks have accelerated interview processes that are geared towards students who are going/will be abroad during the normal recruiting period or people with exploding offers. I know for a fact GS and JPM have these programs (I've been through them) and I imagine other banks have something similar.
If your school has OCR, my advice would be to reach out to the recruiters for your school, let them know your situation and they will tell you how to proceed.
I just had someone PM me
I just had someone PM me about the BB recruiting schedule, so I thought I'd share a simular answer with you that I gave them.
These questions are only a google search away. If I was doing recruitment again (I'm not because I've got my internship and grad program lined up), I'd pull up an excel spreadsheet, list the target BBs, their grad program links, and when recruitment starts, when it ends, who the campus/geographic contact is, etc.
For instance:
I googled "Deutsche Bank graduate program," found the grad program link that Americans use, it linked straight to my location in Australia due to my IP address, the applications opened for the Analyst internship programs in Melbourne and Sydney in April and closed in July (as I said, some of the BB's in Aust. aren't generally taking grads. I then expect the internships will run second semester, and interviewing would be done by early August.
DB-https://www.db.com/careers/content/en/graduate_timelines_1454.html
Google "Goldman Sachs grad program" and the applications in Australia are now open, but only Melbourne and Sydney (again, it directed straight to Australia due to the ip address, but it should be the same web link in America:
http://www.fmaa.com.au/opportunities/graduate-prog......
Simularly, in America, Barclays:
http://graduate.barclayscapital.com/americas/appli...
"Recruitment for our 2012 graduate and summer internship programs began on September 1st, 2011; however, we recruit on a rolling basis, so it's best to apply as early as possible. Please note that as roles are filled, they will be removed from the system."
I'm not going to spell it all out for you, but I'd recommend you don't just think about the Typical BB like:
Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Barclays
Citi
Credit Suisse
Deutsche Bank
Goldman Sachs
J.P. Morgan
Morgan Stanley
UBS
I would also recommend going with some of the internationals like BNP Paribas S. HSBC Holdings PLC, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, that some of the competition might not be considering, keeping in mind that often these ones have much higher total asset holdings than just your Americans (particularly given the drop in the value of the USD), and are leveragable in your London markets if you ever want to travel. If you want to ever get into Australian Markets, Macquarie Bank is one to aim for, keeping in mind how well Australia did in the GFC.
Yes, that doesn't tell you when they are interviewing. But it tells you when recruiting starts. And it tells you they are operating on a rolling schedule, ie they will interview as resumes come in. Once you get through the initial stages, you can worry about asking them when they can book you in for an interview, but generally, if they like you enough, they might fly you in or meet with you.
But as Bankerella said, how much do you actually want this job? Is there actually an important reason you're abroad or is it just a holiday? Because if you make it too difficult for them, are you worth the hassle?
Are you at a target uni? Can you sign up for a recruiting list where you get emails out every week or so, telling you who's opening and who's closing atm, and who you should get in contact with on campus so you can ask them these things?
Also, go talk to career services on campus, go along to info sessions, and meet people, and get the recruiters on site to review your resume and do mock interviews with you and all that. Make sure you're prepared, and ready, before you go reach out to them individually, and have all the simple questions worked out already. If you add value and make them like you, you might actually get them going out of their way to work around your schedule, but otherwise... well, good luck with that.
