When do you stop expecting to hear back from an employer?
I applied for a consulting position two weeks ago as of today (Friday). Within one hour, the HR person replied and asked two follow-up questions that I replied to within an hour.
The next week, I e-mailed this person on Wednesday expressing continued interest in the position, and he replied on Friday (so last Friday) that he'd forwarded my application to the department head, he's awaiting feedback, and that "I will be in touch if we are to progress."
Now it's been one week and I haven't heard anything. Should I keep waiting, or should I send him another e-mail at some point (and if so, when? maybe next week?).
I'm really interested in this position and I think they know that. Not sure I can do anything at this point.
This is a niche consulting practice. They received like 400 applications via LinkedIn apparently.
I interviewed for a fund of hedge funds over a month ago. Still waiting, despite the fact they know that I have other offers (some of which I rejected for them).
I don't know how long to keep waiting but I'd recommend holding off on too many emails at this point, unless you have competing offers or deadlines.

I've applied for investment banking and equity research internships at a variety of firms. Think most of the BBs and then other firms like Jeffries, Evercore, Lazard, etc. I applied online and not through campus recruiting because I'm an engineering major, not a business major. What exactly does the timeline for recruitment look like for these firms? When do they send out interview requests, and at what point should I assume rejection?
If you applied online without having someone at the firm flag your resume there is a very, very, very high chance that you were rejected, especially for research where there are only a few slots. Most banks either don't notify rejected candidates, or they wait until after the entire process is over and the class is filled in case they under extenuating circumstances need more candidates.
