When Name Matters...When Its Stupid?

I have realized that the name of smaller re shops can be quite creative. I was recently contacted by a HH to check out what on the surface appears to be (and probably is) a legit opportunity. It would mean more money, so I have some interest.

However the name of the firm is just so stupid. Using a thesaurs, it is something like "Material Investment Answers". WTF? Why would they name it something like that and not XXXXX Capital or something? I do not want that name on my resume.

Still, this is not the first time I have come across a RE firm that has a dumb, or at least will-require-explaining name. I even struggle with names like "The John Group" because I would assume you are at a disadvantage when sending a resume to the recognized REPE firms (where I want to end up).

Does anyone have experience with this? If you saw an Associate from "The Blue Corporation" would you even read it or assume it is unrelated to your line of work?

Based on the recent acquisitions page, they have put out $100MM in 2012, about the same in 2011. Probably sub-$500MM AUM.

[quote=John_McClane]I think that having Arizona State University would be a worse name to have on your resume. 7.8% unemployment and you're bitching about the name of a firm. Grow the fuck up. http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/final-round-help-i-am-almost-an-a…]

There is so much wrong with these three sentences.

Given your lack of reading comprehension and inclusion of irrelevant details, I would say you have much more to worry about than the size of salary you should write on your HPY submission.

What the hell are you talking about - if you are stupid enough to believe that the name (not the reputation) of a firm will hinder you in your career (rather than, I don't know, YOUR PERFORMANCE?), go kill yourself.

Doesn't mean anything, but we used to love joking about the banks/funds with really funny names. Obviously stuff like Miller Buckfire, Houlihan Lokey, and Dodge & Cox (conveniently located in SF... must be plenty of dodgin' going down) was always fun to laugh at. One more than one occasion I've accidentally said "Miller Buttfuck" on accident in mixed company.

Best Response

That was fast!

And again with the ridiculous response too!

1) You responded to a post regarding name and the first thing you did was pull the non-target card. Counterproductive to your point.

2) You mention the unemployment rate. Why? Did I say I was unemployed? You might as well have quoted literally anything, because that statement is just so irrelevant.

3) I am not bitching about the name of a firm. Bitching implies a grievance. I am simply curious on thoughts.

4) Grow the fuck up? You said this after dissing my school. Doesn't make sense + also counterproductive.

5) You respond again, once again misinterpreting my OP and throwing out child-like phrases, although this time "go kill yourself" (who the fuck says that anymore?) vs. "grow the fuck up".

6) I explicitly said that there was concern about the recognized names recognizing one-off weird name firms. Read between the lines here. Actually, here: I was not refering to known reputable firms with weird names.

That is a lot of stupid shit you just said in (now 4) sentences. At this point I am sensing anger regarding the name of your own firm. lol.

Responding to these types of posts is proving funner than expected.

xXsk8247365Xx, I know you care about the name so bad, cus you don't want to water down that ASU cred. I understand your position. You went str8 from undergrad to associate, because of your baller interview skills. You typed out that post like a boss on WSO -- telling everyone how awesome you are. Only to be told by everyone that you're a moron.

Do you have any other questions on names? Because I don't think anyone can live up to your's, asu s8r boi...
