Rockstar partner or top out at VP in CorpFina

A friend of mine and I were talking about whether we'd rather be a top level rockstar partner (lets say by 35) or pretty much top out in a VP of finance type role in corpfina (same age). Which would you guys rather do?

I'm operating under the assumption that this is a hypothetical situation where I am magically transported to age 35 and don't have to go through everything leading up to it...

In which case, I think I'd go with Partner. Not to sound like a complete douche here, but it sounds/seems cooler.

That said, I have no intentions (although I always keep an open mind) to shoot for partner. VP of Finance seems to more fit my ultimate goals. I'd rather work up the ranks working normal hours with a life than busy season hours at a Big 4.

Top level rockstar like Bono or equivalent? How is this even a question? I would definitely be a rockstar over some stupid job in finance.

Maternity is a matter of fact, paternity is a matter of opinion.

Is this asking if I would want to be an equity partner in a baller ass firm/fund or a VP of Finance?

...really?

Isn't that something like $3,000,000/yr vs. $300,000/yr?

I think those figures are slightly exaggerated.

Certainly some interesting answers here.

I'm thinking at a top firm so PwC or Deloitte and a F1000 type VP of finance role. The real question is would you rather pretty much guarantee yourself senior partner type money (Hypothetical $1.5 million) versus a job that you may find more interesting and work less hours. So it boils down to whether your thinking purely from a money stand point or from a job satisfaction standpoint.

I have no clue how interesting being a partner would be but I have to be honest and say I find the prospect of working through the ranks at a firm to be interesting. Yea the work sucks and everything but I feel it's competitive to move up and that challenge of trying to be the top guy at your firm is something I would enjoy.
