Just Trying To Look The Part Boyyyyy

They say a man’s watch speaks volumes and finding one that says the right thing can be crucial, especially in this image-obsessed business. I’ve been in the market for a good timepiece (that’s what jewelers call watches that are unjustifiably expensive) for a while and haven’t come across “the one” just yet. Here’s a quick rundown of the some of the most popular brands out there and the respective impressions they make, in my humble opinion.

Rolex – An old classic, but a horrible watch for a younger man. Boring and plain, it looks like a possible bar mitzvah hand me down, especially with the older band style seen in the picture.

Breitling – This watch has become the standard “nice watch” of choice for our generation. It’s big, bulky and expensive; perfect for attention seeking gen-y d-bags. Truth is it’s not bad looking but it’s mega played out already and who the hell wants to spend $5k on something so common?

Cartier – Classy and understated, but a bit dainty. In one word - “European-ish”.

Movado – Not unlike the Rolex, the Movado has a very classic look that says “I’m daddy’s special little guy”.

Jacob & Co. – Don’t be fucking ridiculous.

If anyone knows of any decent watches worth looking into please let me know. I’ve been bare-wristed for a while now and I'd like to shnazz it up a bit.

Panerai - GMT or Chrono IWC - Vintage Collection - Portuguese Hand Wound Jaeger LeCoultre - Reverso or Master Compressor Chopard - this is the only watch I make an exception to detail for (see breitling comment below) Vacheron Constantin - this is just classic, nothing else to describe it Patek Phillipe - the ferrari of watches, classic, sleek, simple, humble but the base model is ~$13k (calatrava)

Breitling for me is too much - too much detail, to much going on on the face, too bulky...

Don't go for the jewelry companies that happen to have watch collections ie Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany; Movado is just garbage in the watch world. Careful with a quartz movement (battery), most movados are quartz, these are also garbage. Any quality watch has to be automatic or hand wound...

christ. really? if you're the type that likes spending $5-20K+ on a watch while you're still in your 20s, thats fine. thats your prerogative. but it was the buying too much expensive shit that you shouldn't be buying that brought us to the recession. just something to think about.

i used to be into watches myself. until i realized i was pretty fucking stupid.

if i didn't have to worry about losing my job or saving money, i personally would go with omega. in fact, i almost bought a speedmaster pro when i started working. its the 'i couldn't give a fuck about my watch' watch.

i am sick of rolexes. literally everybody at my office who is over 30 has a submariner. they're not bad, they're just everywhere.

Yup - I have been in love with the IWC Portuguese series for 2 years now for many reasons.

I plan on waiting for a big event in the future where I reward myself. (It could be a while).

"They say a man’s watch speaks volumes and finding one that says the right thing can be crucial, especially in this image-obsessed business. "

I'm pretty sure the only people that say that are people trying to sell you a watch, and epic douche bags.

That said I do really like the Sinn Klassik, if I was going to drop a lot of money on a watch that's what I'd buy:

The old school Omega Seamasters are pretty sweet too.

Movados are for guidos and Breitlings are unbelievably douchey. I do like the Pateks but can't imagine spending 13k on a watch.

heh, yeah. it can either say 'i have a small penis, women wont sleep with me and i cant think for myself' or it can say 'i couldnt give a fuck.'

Who needs a watch anymore? Do you look at your watch while you are talking on your landline or trying to figure out the fax machine? If you are spending more than a grand on a watch, you would probably be better off just wrapping $100 bills around your arm, it will convey what you are trying to tell people a lot more clearly.

For the record, I have a seiko chronograph that just sits and collects dust. Occasionally I will put it on when I am going to a wedding or interview, but usually I just leave it at home- watches just look douchey to me, and I personally negatively correlate them with wealth as it seems every guido out there spends their first months earnings on some 50mm watch that looks ridiculous on them. In my experience, the flashier the watch, the smaller the bank account, with an exception for white guys over 40.

Uhm, I use my watch all the time thanks, it's not merely a fashion accessory. I do agree that some of the bigger watches just make you look like a douche, but if that is your honest preference (and not because everyone else has a Breitling), then more power to you. Personally, I'm a fan of the understated, don't even particularly want a chronograph.

At the end of the day, you either like watches or not (or did and then changed your mind a la mr1234). One group is not going to convince the other. Let's perhaps then try to stay on topic.

Hublot: Younger Image, pretty sleek and not too expensive IWC: Classic and sharp Corum: Sportsy and pretty distinguinshed Rolex: Investment (agree on the Boring part) Hermes: Fancy but would be concerned about the reliability

Not sure what your price range is, but there are a few brands out there that are not too crazy expensive and are unique.

Franck Muller, Graham, IWC, Zenith, etc.

Rolex does have some pretty good looking watches, but most are just way overpriced for what it is. I'm not a watch expert, but I can always elaborate more on this topic.

BTW, if you don't care about brand but want a really good watch, look into the Grand Seiko.

My boss is one of the richest guys I know, he never wears a tie, yet he wears a 25k Vacheron.

To all the people who think watches are a waste of money, DON"T GET ONE!

If you like watches (personally I do), then get one of a style and finish that you like. If you only want a watch to tell time, don't spend money on a nice watch, get something cheap that tells time accurately. Personally, I own a Breitling Chrono, because I like the style, craftsmanship etc. I also like some Omega's, Longines and even a few of the Tourneau watches you can get for around 1K when they are on sale.

Everyone has things they like to splurge on, so if you want to spend your money on nice things, like a car that has nice finishes, fancy shoes, cool computers or what not, spend money on those things. Or you can spend money on a watch.

If you think nice things are pointless, I hope you eat gruel, take public transportation, live in a small box, and wear Walmart clothes. If you don't, contribute something useful elsewhere.

--There are stupid questions, so think first.

Awesome.

In the same kind: I don t get those cheapos MDs that wears shitty Casio coupled with cheap ass suits...

I would be a client I would think "These guys must not be doing so well...it is NOT reassuring..."
