low gpa, non target, future plans?

Hi guys,

I just was wondering what you guys think about how I could one day get into MBB. I attended a mediocre at best top 50-75 undergrad business ranking, business major and got a 3.25 gpa (far less than amazing). Until junior year, my grades were lackluster at best as much of my effort was in sports. I was an NCAA athlete. Obviously, any opportunity at MBB would be impossible as of now.

I have received admission to law school in fall, but am thinking of changing plans as its not what i thought i wanted. assuming a law degree will not be in any way useful for consulting (right?). the game plan now is to attend a highly ranked MBA, and then get into consulting post grad, however I was wondering if my non target school and low gpa would be too much of a roadblock to overcome one day.

Edit: Sorry, I was sleep deprived and don't even remember what made me post such directly negative reply.

unlikely at best as you said with just UG credentials. I like your networking plans though!

Achiever in college from freshman year: Rainmaker. Hustler in college from junior year: More than you initially hoped for. Dreamer in college from senior year: Top closer for 4 man boutique in Idaho in toilet lid M&A Everyone else: Dunkin Donuts.

Don't listen to some stupid sophomore. If you get into a Top 10-15 MBA (won't be that difficult as an athlete, assuming decent work experience, GMAT, etc.), and then do all the right things (go thru the on campus motions, get the case right), you can land in MBB. It is still 4-5 years out though, so something to keep in mind.

Unless your low school is T14, MBB will be tough/impossible from there.

Which law school? Unless it's T14, it'll be highly unlikely. Also, if you go MBA route, you need to be much more worried about your job coming out of school. Crap work experience will make it much less likely to get into a top B-school and, after the top 15 or so, MBB is also going to be a big stretch. Have you thought of widening your consulting options?

its a regional law school from my hometown, it was my "ticket" to move back home as high paying jobs are hard to come by, which was my real reason for applying. hence why i assumed it isnt worth much in consulting world. outside the degree isnt worth much, where i plan to start a family one day, its golden and all the local law firms recruit almost exclusively out of uh's law school. though it sets me up for where i want to be one day, im just not sure if it sets me up for what i want to do right now. exit strategy wise, would it even make sense to do big consulting just to move home to a largely insular job market?
