Consulting firms recruit their SA's at the same time banks do - January through March. Class sizes vary across firms, but as you said they are hard to come by. The advisory divisions of PwC/KPMG/EY hire a lot of interns but they are considered "Tier 3" consulting firms. MBB & Deloitte S&O take about ~50 interns a year at the undergrad level I believe. Would a Big 4 advisory internship be a good setup for full-time?
Full time for what? You need to define what type of consulting you're interested in first. There's management/strategy, HR, technology, operational, marketing/pricing, etc.
Also, the functions of each department within "Advisory" and the Advisory division itself differs quite significantly for each Big 4. To someone outside the industry, the difference might not seem that big, but people in the consulting industry (especially HR who will be reviewing your resume/application) know the differences.
Sorry I should have been more specific. How difficult is it to land the management/strategy internships of the Big 4? And if one cannot do that, what are the next best things to shoot for?
