Investor Relations to Equity Research
Howdy everyone, I wanted to gauge the feasibility of a hypothetical situation.
I'm currently a portfolio management analyst and have wanted to break into equity research for about 3 years now. I was recently invited to interview with a company that specializes in healthcare with the position being for their investor relations role.
Some of the responsibilities sound kinda similar to a research role:
-
Prepare reports for clients detailing analyst models...
-
Track and report on client and competitor/peer business developments and financial results.
-
Collecting and analyzing sell side estimates and maintain consensus model.
-
Do stuff for quarterly calls, earnings releases and management Q&A (I paraphrased here)
-
Participate in client meeting and calls
Like I said, not 100% what equity research is but like a fraction of it, right?
Long story short, I have absolutely no desire to stay in the the current job any longer than I need to and want to make the best decision for myself and my career. Hell, I mostly do my own equity research stuff on the job just to continue building/maintaining my models and pass the time.
The question I want to ask is, if I were to hypothetically take the role as a healthcare investor relations analyst, could I be more attractive as an equity research prospect, especially for a healthcare supplies and devices team as that's been my area of desire? I'm really looking for any help possible.
Thank you!
I also wanted to add that I build models out and do my own earning call reports and share them with analyst for feedback and such. I've interviewed with a boutique equity research firms in the past couple months and went all the way to the final round before they chose someone with more experience. So I'm no stranger to the requirements needed to be an equity researcher.
Would it increase your odds of breaking into ER? Probably, if you’re good and build relationships with the sell side.
Keep in mind that IR is a common exit for ER. If you get the job and enjoy it, why leave?
Also, don’t say “equity researcher”. Sounds weird imo
Lol, thank you for the advice!
Yea I’ve seen it done. Someone at my bank moved from WBA IR to ER (non related coverage).
I don’t know how common it is but it’s possible. ER jobs involve a lot of luck. Right place right time.
