Do I have to buy expensive high fashion attire?
If I buy a sub $300 suit, sub $100 dress shoes, $30 tie, and $45 dress shirt as my business attire will I be ostracized at work?
I'm poor and have student loans to pay, but I feel like if I want to be one of the good old boys at work I'll have to buy some cuff-links, ferragamo shoes, Ferragamo ties, zegna suit, and a diamond earring (princess cut) to fit in. I do have a nice build and clothes fit on me pretty well so people always ask me "oh your shoes look good, what brand are they?" It's already enough that I have to hide the fact that I went to a public high school and when you look this good the questions just don't stop.
FUBU.
Look good but don't worry too much about dropping a ton of dough. Any co-worker worth associating with isn't going to care what designer you have on.
You won't be laid off if your not wearing Ferragamo shoes
When it comes to fashion, it's all about fit and fabric. You can buy a decent JCrew suit on sale for around $200, get it altered to fit well on your body type, and you'll be fine. The worst is when guys spend money on clothes because it's a particular label and it fits like crap. I buy my suits made-to-measure from a guy in HK and the suits cost me around $600. The suits fit so well and every time I wear them, people will ask if I'm wearing Armani, Zegna, etc. I tell them it's custom and they automatically think I dropped $2K. The secret is all about the suit fitting me properly.
I've seen in a few issues of GQ where they take random guys off the street with improperly fitting clothes and remake their look with reasonably priced clothes with the proper fit. It's a great illustration of how something as simple as fit can make a huge difference in your appearance.
Android -- couldn't agree more. How did you come across this guy in HK and what's the process like? 600 is very reasonable for a great fitting shit.
I was introduced to this tailor through one of my buddies when he was an associate at Lehman. The tailor travels throughout the US a couple times a year visiting the major cities. You can go to nitafashions.com (it's a crappy site, I know) and check out his upcoming schedule. When he comes to town, he'll take your measurements and you can pick which fabrics, color, and patterns you want. Six weeks later you get your suit or dress shirts. I've purchased 3 suits from him and have been very satisfied. I have a few dress shirts, which are $60 each and are made to measure which fit like a glove. The shirts fit better than any "extra-slim" fit shirts I've tried on at Banana Republic, JCrew, etc. I haven't tried the extra-slim fit shirts from Brooks Brothers but I've heard they fit fairly well.
You all are idiots.
PJC, if you came into work wearing any of that shit I would ostracize the shit out of you for being cheap with your $60k/year salary. And student loans? YOU WENT TO PUBLIC SCHOOL, WHAT STUDENT LOANS?
And I damn well expect you to have rock on both ears. That's how it be done, son.
I hope you're joking mas1987. Aren't you unemployed at the moment anyway?
Two things:
1) It's PJC's topic, do you think it's serious?
2) It's PJC's topic do you think I'm being serious?
3) No I am not unemployed at the moment.
And, no, I can't count.
if your smart enough to work at a bank your smart enough to see that buying nice fitted, good looking clothes that will make a better impression on you is a long term deal (investment in your career)
Think long term. If you look like shit, people will unfortunately treat you like shit. Look good but dont be a brand whore.
I have to agree with fit. Find a good tailor, and get good quality clothes that match your body. End of. Quality doesn't mean you have to spend thousands of dollars.
have to agree with Shaniqua, can't go wrong with something that is classy and time tested.

I, going to a non-target school in the midwest, have the time and the land to actually grown my own cotton and raise my own sheep. I hire illegal Mexicans to tend to my crop and care for my sheep. I also raise cattle for the specific purpose of crafting fine leather shoes for myself. The Mexicans feed them too. When I feel it is time for a new piece of attire, I send Jorge out to shear me some wool and gather some cotton. Jorge then brings the raw materials to into my barn where they are processed and made into fabric by the children of my illegals. My tailor, Mario, then crafts the finest suits and shirts on this earth. All my buttons are pure ivory, smuggled in by my guys from China, who also bring me the finest silk in the East. This, my friends, is the true way to dress oneself. Only a fool would waste money going to retail stores to acquire garb.
I've also learned through this operation that my illegals are also really good at rum-running.

Fit over any name brand.
Fit matters most. High fashion designers will wow people, sure, but if you're designer from head to toe some might find that too excessive - that's also one to consider for me.
