Scared About BB Background Check Potential Problem

Currently getting background checked at a BB. I have two unpaid internships on my resume.

The first one was at this startup that went belly-up, and the owner moved onto a different industry. Turns out he had made several of these "startups", which all failed, and he was even sued by one intern at some point for not delivering. We weren't paid, there was no actual documents we signed, I don't even know if the company was registered. The only people who can back me up on this is the guy who started the company (who isn't responding to any of my messages), and a boss-coworker that I reported to, but he's working in some other company. The second guy, the boss-coworker, said to just give the background check people his number, and he'll confirm it. I worry that since the company wasn't registered to begin with, it'll fuck me over.

The second one was a boutique finance firm that's owned by my friend. I worked there unpaid for some time, got some experience, and it's on my resume. That firm is legitimate and is still going strong, but it's literally him and a few other people. I reported to him/worked with him, and he's happy with confirming I worked there.

Thing is, both of these internships were virtual, the second had no official signing documents or processes, I literally just asked if I could work unpaid to get experience, and just immediately started. The first one had some signing documents I signed and emailed over to the main guy who was sued. For both companies, we literally met on Zoom/Discord every few days, got up to speed, I was assigned some work, I sent it back, and that was that. I was thinking of just showing the work I did as proof if I was ever asked about it, but almost all the work has financial information about the clients he deals with, and he specified not wanting any of that getting out. I didn't sign a non-disclosure agreement or anything, but I'm definitely not going to send the documents out to anyone in that case.

Am I fucked? Am I screwed? What can I do? I worry this is gonna bite me in the ass or something. Also, is it true they'll ask for two references for each company that we've worked at in the past?

I think you'll be fine as long as the guy didn't make it onto national news or something for being a fraudster.

Although, I wouldn't trust anyone operating a "startup" through Discord lmao

You are most likely fine as these comments say, but I have a friend who also had 2 unpaid internships. Although they were legit, because he didn't have a W-2 for them, he didn't put them on his experience for the background check. Next thing you know, top BB said that he did not pass the background check as his experience profile and resume did not match up. Now he has missed a few days of training already and hasn't even been approved yet. They made him obtain letters of rec or proof of completion for each internship.

did your friend have to submit another updated resume when the background check was occuring? I was wondering this because I initially planned on doing an unpaid internship this summer that also had no official documentation but I got a paid internship instead and was wondering if they will check my resume when I submitted my first application or my updated one before next summer

When you are preparing for the background check, they ask you to list all of your experiences and titles on some website platform. In his case he didn't have to submit a different resume but I have heard of that being the case for some banks.
