$12 for a Cup of Coffee???

Following in the footsteps of $50 hamburgers, there is now a $12 cup of coffee in New York. Not a double half-caf mochacino soy latté with fairy dust sprinkled on it, mind you, but a $12 cup of regular drip coffee. Café Grumpy has introduced the heady brew, custom roasted in-store at their locations in Brooklyn and Chelsea.

Designer coffees are nothing new, and the bar has been raised to the point where people are willing to pay over $200 for a pound of coffee that has been fermented in the gut of some ferret-looking jungle animal and then crapped out. I'm a big coffee drinker, but I'm pretty sure I could go the rest of my life without pawing through some animal's feces to put together my morning Joe.

So, has anyone tried this $12 cup of coffee yet? Does it really light the world on fire? Or is it just Folgers brewed up by a dirty hippie and sold in a coffee shop that's too cute for its own good? On a side note, how much coffee do you consume on an average day?

M-002:
There is a famous burger joint here in Chicago who charges only $10-12, but I have said before that I would pay as much as $30 to eat it. It is that good.

What Chicago burger joint are you referring to?

M-002:
0 coffee consumed by me, but your description of their $12 cup is probably spot on.

I would consider trying a $50 burger, but not an everyday lunch. Even for a one-time deal, $50 is pushing it.

I had a kobe burger in some trendy place in chicago... think it was $45 and pretty good..broker picked up tab so I didnt give a shit

No coffee for me. No caffeine either for that matter, when I can help it. I'm too high strung as it is, so coffee and caffiene just make me totally miserable.

In my case, I usually drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day. And, a senior banker who I worked with before told me that he had spent over $2,000 for a single month, just for coffee; a true heavy coffee drinker. But, a 12$ coffee doesn’t really surprise me that much. I had once visited a restaurant where it sold a bottle of cola for 10$!

I believe it. $10 for a bottle of water at restaurants

sick_willy:
usually about 160-240 grams of caffeine a day (2-3 cups of coffee) but i do it with red bull and 5 hour energy
are u guys crazy ???

Camondo:
By the way, $12 is not that much if the coffee is really good and if the place is nice! In that case, you don't only pay for the coffee, but also for the whole atmosphere.

With those kinds of prices the "atmosphere" had better be a tight 19 year old blonde cheerleader under the table blowing me.

$50 Burger is understandable but as for a $12 cup of coffee it is more of a luxury. Knowing that you can afford to drink 5 cups of coffee and spend $60/day really makes you feel good.

someotherguy:
I recently upped it to 3 cups a day, but out of the Flavia machines in the office, which seem to be light on the caffeine. Occasionally I will drink a small ("tall") Starbucks, and the amount of caffeine in one of those usually gives me the shakes.

+1 on the Flavia. Two cups of House of Blend, everyday. Anytime I take some time off I have the hardest time getting used to it again because that stuff is so nasty.

I guess no one saw the movie "The Bucket List.". It was an excellent movie. Pay close attention to the last few lines of the movie.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."
