Best business electives for investment banking?
Hey Monkeys,
I am at a semi-target university and I would like to pick 6 of the elective courses listed below that are most relevant for investment banking.
Managerial Economics
Competitive Strategy
Intermediate Financial Accounting 1
Intermediate Financial Accounting 2
Advanced Financial Accounting
Federal Income Tax Accounting
Financial Information Analysis
Auditing
Special Topics in Accounting
Strategic Cost Management
Financial Reporting for Complex Transactions
Financial Institutions and Markets
Behavioral Finance
Power and Politics in Organizations
Can you help me point out the courses that would be useful in investment banking or to break into investment banking? In addition, what courses, doesn't have to be finance or business related, that has helped you on your job and life? Thank you very much!
By the way, the whole business elective course list is found here.
whichever ones you can get 6 As in
Pick the ones that you think to score better. All of those are fine
Do you guys think I should up to advanced accounting, or not? In other words, do you use accounting in banking and, if so, to what level?
useful electives for IB (Originally Posted: 10/11/2012)
I am studying towards a Bsc in Accounting & Finance degree and wanted to know what are some useful electives for IBD/S&T/ER and generally FO roles in IB.
-International Financial Reporting Standards -Income Taxation (mainly personal taxes, less corporate) -Alternative Investments -Maths (differential equations etc.)
None of those, I'd say maybe math for S and T, but classes like securities valuation will be more useful
Maybe an intro to programming class (something that uses VBA would obviously be the best since you can tie that in with your Excel skills).
Corp fin 1 and 2, financial markets and institutions, fixed income, investment analysis, financial modeling and derivatives. Not sure if those are offered at your school, but that what I did, and those classes served me well
No one will care so none of those, but if i had to pick from the list IFRS if it teaches you how to read and analyze financial statements. That's definitely part of the job in IB.
None of those choices are really that useful. If I had to choose I'd take DiffEQ though, it's a fun class :D
