Georgetown vs UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad business/economics
Hello all,
I am a new user of this site, a high school senior who is seriously interested in a career in the financial industry. I have a few questions for you guys, and I was hoping I could get some advice.
I have been accepted to Georgetown University's Mcdonough School of Business, and granted assured admission after my sophomore year to the Kenan-Flagler business school at UNC. Kenan Flagler is "ranked" higher by a few sources, but what is the industry opinion on the two schools? Money is not a factor in my decision.
No matter which school I choose, I will have to choose between an Economics major in the college, or a business/ finance major at the business school. Does this distinction even really matter? I would assume that a finance major would be more on the practical side of the material, but do I-Banks really view this as a large factor when hiring?
I am desperate for some help here, thanks in advance for any advice you guys and girls have to offer.
Georgetown MSB is great for IB recruiting.
They are both great schools.
If cost is no object, Georgetown is a better school for IB recruiting.
If UNC is in-state and your parents are only millionaires, not multimillionaires, do them a favor and go in-state; just do yourself a favor too and demand that they spend the savings on long-term care insurance so you don't have to worry about them.
What region are you thinking about living in post-grad? I know it seems far away but if you like the Southeast/Charlotte especially UNC is going to be very strong. Georgetown will but UNC's network is much stronger in the SE than NYC, where Georgetown is strong.
What are your financial considerations?
College Decision Help (Georgetown vs UNC) (Originally Posted: 04/30/2014)
So I've narrowed down my college decision to two schools: UNC and Georgetown. At Georgetown, I'd be in McDonough and minor in biology from the college. At UNC, I'd double major in business at Kenan Flagler and biology. I'd like to combine the two for a career, with more focus on the business side (like biotech IB).
I see distinct pros and cons for both sides and was looking for other opinions. Georgetown has advantages in its general name/prestige, on campus recruiting, location (closer to NYC), and alumni network. On the other hand, UNC has better social life (actual frats), sports, allows me to double major, and has better research. I also recieved a full ride scholarship to UNC, but am fortunate in that I can pay for Georgetown without taking on any debt (although then the money would be unavailable for grad school/other uses).
I'd really appreciate any opinions, as I am deadlocked with the deadline quickly approaching.
Both are great schools. I would probably choose Georgetown though.
Georgetown > UNC
UNC recruiting is overhyped and both schools have excellent social scenes.
if you can afford Georgetown, do it. I spent some time in NC and you're right, the lifestyle in Chapel Hill is great, but outside of the campus, there's not much to do, not a lot of bars, restaurants, etc. If I had the funds to afford Georgetown for college, I'd do it. Georgetown has a great social scene, is in a great area of DC, close to Baltimore, and I'd bet it has a better alumni network. if you get a great job out of undergrad, you won't need that money for b-school.
First off, congrats. Both are great schools and you're fortunate. While I would say Georgetown is a slightly better program, if you got a full ride to UNC, I would choose that hands down. Georgetown isn't all that much better and if you can walk away from undergrad with an extra $150k in your pocket you'll be much better off. Both will offer opportunities for IB and you'll be just fine. FWIW, I looked at the analysts at the bank I interned at (BB) and there were people from both UNC and Georgetown.
I would take Georgetown, as that will leave your options wide open. As SEC said, UNC is fantastic regionally, and not terribly difficult to get into NYC, but Georgetown is a great name regardless of where you are, and especially in NYC.
HELP: Georgetown MSB or UNC Kenan Flagler for Undergrad (Originally Posted: 04/04/2016)
I'm a senior who lives in NC and has to decide between the Georgetown's McDonough undergraduate business program and UNC's Kenan Flagler undergrad program. I received assured acceptance to Kenan Flagler (about 70 incoming freshman get this in a class at KF that is around 330 by graduation). After financial aid, Gtown MSB will only be approximately 10-15k more expensive than UNC. I would probably pursue a finance major at MSB, but i'm also really interested in doing something with international business or public studies, maybe a joint program with the SFS. It's been hard to nail down both of the programs' respective prestige levels, particularly in regard to working at higher level BBs and boutiques in NYC. I would also really be interested in working overseas, which makes me think that Gtown has a significant edge in terms of international prestige. Really trying to figure things out, I could really use some advice/knowledge on each program's OCR and job prospects.
I would go with UNC Chapell Hill. It is the stronger school by a long shot.

Goto the school that suits you best. Don't make the mistake of getting up with prestige and rankings. Choosing one over the other will not make you any better off than the alternative. The school that fits your needs the best is the one to goto.
Really tough decision - recruiting is better at GTown but social life is better at UNC (although it's a marginal difference for both variables). Visit both campuses to see which you prefer.
You'll hardly be losing out on social life at Gtown.
Thank you all. @ Illini, not millionaires , but my father's post 9/11 GI bill, which he is generously allowing me to use, will cover almost the entire cost of both schools. How do you guys feel about the Economics Vs Finance major choice?
If you want to do Finance, major in Finance.
