What exactly is Boston College's Reputation?
I am an incoming freshman at Boston College CSOM. I'm not set particularly on IB, but I want to keep that option open. I have been reading on here about recruiting and reputation of BC and it seems to be all over the place. While its universally agreed to be a semi target, I've seen comments saying its very weak with minimal recruitment to having a lot of opportunities. So how good exactly CSOM? Is it overshadowed by all of the other strong schools in the area?
Overall a very solid semi-target with the most recruiting coming from Citi, UBS, Deutsche and Barclays. There are other non-BBs that recruit from BC such as RBC, William Blair, Nomura, Cantor, and Jefferies. BC will also send a couple of kids (usually 1-2) to each of the top banks but virtually none to EBs. Still a solid school and will depend on how well you network.
I see lot of BC guys go to Citi.
Did you get into ND as well?
I didn't apply to ND. Georgetown was actually my first choice, but I didn't get in.
It's pretty prelfstigious.
From what I have heard- it is not that prestigious but it has decent recruiting. Of course you have Harvard/MIT in the area so they are sending many to top BBs, if you get a decent GPA you should be fine with one of the lower BBs, you will probably have to go above and beyond to be at a top BB.
If you are wanting to work in Boston and in particular are Irish Catholic BC is Harvard level. If not Boston, that disappears and your degree prestige drops considerably.
OCR is mainly Piper Jaffray, have fun.
IBD placement from BC undergraduate (Originally Posted: 05/01/2012)
Any opinions on this board about BC's undergraduate placement in finance? I'm currently on the waiting list and I might consider going there if I get taken off. Right now, I have acceptances from WUSTL, USC, and Vandy. I'm currently leaning towards WUSTL for the academic reputation, but it seems like BC might have better placement in NY compared to the others.
TRANSFER
BC places pretty well in IBD, few go to BB's and plenty go to MM's.
Check out the Career Surveys. They give you a good indication, although the number of jobs offered at company XYZ can be misleading, as it includes everything from their Investment Banking division to the tech crew.
The first number is from the 2009 report, the second is from 2010.
% Indicated IB 4.6% 18% JPMorgan # 8 6 Goldman # 6 >4 Credit Suisse >4 >4 UBS 4 >4 Bank of America 11 >4 No other jobs from the Bulge Bracket.
Thanks. The survey numbers look pretty good and suggest that BC is a semi-target? Although it would be much more useful if they indicated which of those jobs were front office roles. I thought BarCap and Citi recruited pretty actively on campus?
I also have offers from USC (Marshall) and Vanderbilt. Would either of these be better choices if I were looking for positions in the northeast? Or would BC be my best bet?
I would take USC or Vandy for girls and warm weather. USC would be tough to get to NY offer, but Vandy is definitely doable (search Vandy / vanderbilt, a lot of threads on it)
My understanding is that it's a semi-target, and if you're proactive about leveraging the alumni network you may well open even more doors.
