Toronto VC Associate Salaries
Hello,
Been getting some inbounds from recruiters and I always ask for salary range so wanted to share some with y'all. (Note: These are all super early on, probably room to move up in negotiations.)
-
Toronto based growth and VC firm (~600M AUM) - $150-170k base + 30% bonus + carry
-
Whitecap Venture Partners; $120K + 20%, plus carry with a target of about $400-600K
If anyone else wants to share, feel free!
Thanks for the datapoints. Any sense for if this is on par with US salaries? Seems quite high for VC, though may be a function of the larger AUM?
I'll leave it to others to comment, as I haven't recruited much outside of Canada due to family reasons. My sense is that salaries have been rising across the board (in US and Canada) due to current talent market.
Wow I’m surprised Whitecap is that high. By my understanding that is above what a lot of VC shops are paying, and I’ve heard culture / hours at Whitecap is absurdly good
Are these for associate roles (~2 years of IB/consulting experience)?
curious as well
Oh yes, sorry I didn't clarify. Both are for Associate roles yes.
Since it’s VC, they also take people with operating experience at a startup on par (if not ahead) of banking/buyside/consulting experience
Those figures are definitely higher than what I recall in the past. That carry for whitecap though, did they give more info on that (in X years, percentages…?)
Are these new associate roles, or seasoned?
Unfortunately they did not, I'm guessing it's over a couple of years though (like however long their funds usually last)
Adding two more that are different from the original post at Associate (typically 1 - 2 years banking equivalent experience prior). Whitecap originally came out with $100k + 20% so looks like they've bumped it up.
Well Known Canadian VC: $175k all in cash + small amount of carry on a 10-year vest. Not sure what salary-to-bonus split is.
Canadian CVC: $120k + 20% bonus. No carry yet. RRSP match and ESPP match programs.
I imagine the "well known" data point is from the Georgian/Inovia/Radical category and that's less than what a lot of first year IB analysts make but quite strong for Canadian standards anyhow
This was super helpful. I'll add in my comp from out West which I assume will be less than Toronto.
Associate Role pays $100k Salary + 15-20% bonus and expecting carry for the new fund. This is for a first year associate role and I'm (hopefully) expecting a paybump after the first year.
