Accepted Summer Analyst Job

Hi all,

Wanted to send out a thank you for all of the help (guides, forum posts, interesting diversions). I just accepted a summer analyst position in Morgan Stanley's Institutional Equities department. Coming from a non-target, it's been a long road, so I appreciate all the information on this site tremendously.

When you get a chance, post up your background story so other non-target kids benefit from your experience.

Congratulations on the offer.

I'm a Economics and International Affairs major at a large state school in the South, concurrently pursuing a Masters in Economics.

As most people will say, networking helped me break-in. I started conducting informational interviews early in the fall and then visited NY in early January. During that trip I was able to visit alumni on several trading floors to both learn about the industry and gain the necessary contacts for resume pushes later on. Through the help of these contacts, I received first round interviews from some of the BB banks.

During the process, since I didn't have finance experience, the key was to be able to demonstrate my capabilities (quantitative skills, leadership experience, etc.) and interest in the industry (knowledge of s&t, stock pitches, story, etc.). I used interview guides (WSO and Vault) as well as practice with peers to help prepare for these interviews. Fortunately, everything worked out, and now I'm looking forward to the summer.

That's my background, but feel free to ask questions if that didn't cover what you all were looking for.

That is fucking baller man, congratulations! Stick around and impart your soon-to-be vast knowledge of MS and IE on the future monkeys haha

Guys, thanks for the support and congratulations.

Another thing I just thought of is that finance internships aren't the only value-add summer experiences. I studied at Oxford (English Historiography) and LSE (Money & Banking, Industrial Organisation) after my Freshman and Sophomore year respectively, and performed well in my coursework there. These academic engagements gave me some credibility that my school's curriculum may not have on its own. Surely if you know S&T or IBD is your intended career path early on, PWM and MM IBD internships are worthwhile experiences. Nevertheless, studying abroad is a blast and provides interesting talking points for interviews.
