Asset Management out of college

I have an offer to join the IMD of a top BB think MSIM, GSAM, JP Morgan as a summer analyst, and another offer as a summer analyst at another BB in S&T. I know it is unusual to start a career in asset management out of college on the buy side, is it true about the limited mobility and opportunities, relative to coming over after a few years on the sell side? Conversly, if you are in trading, is it possible to move over to asset management and do research?

Most traders move over to AM

Most traders move over to AM and do Portfolio Management which has some aspect of research but obviously is more of a trading role.

I have met people who have went from S&T to AM and vise versa at the BB I am starting at in July.

Hey,

It really depends on what you want to do. Is it for a spec. product in AM or generalist?

The position is more of a research/strategy role. Is it possible, or have traders been able to move over and do strategy in AM? I am leaning towards trading as I want to learn about it for a couple of years, but my ultimate goal is to work in AM. Will HR and people in the group you turn down, scorn you once full time hiring comes around or after a few years?

AM to trading?

You say that many traders go to AM and vice versa. Typically how many years do these AM people stick at AM until they get a chance to move to S&T?
