Business casual - slacks and dress shirt. Very rarely ever wear jacket and tie. Wear a North Face jacket or vest if you really want to fit in. This is for SF btw, mileage may vary in LA.
I second the fleece/vest combo with slacks and a dress shirt. Keep jacket in cubicle for meetings though.
I've seen more suits and ties in LA than SD or SF. Most firms B Casual in SF/SD.
Is there really much of a banking presence in SD? I would love to live there, but I've never seen many opportunities there.
Not really, unfortunately. Would totally be my Nr1 place to live and work.
Hardly a few IB's, some HF/PE/FOF's though.
Business casual down in LA at all BBs and boutiques I know of. To reiterate previous posts, always a good idea to have a jacket/tie ready in your cube just incase.
A lot of offices also allow "nice" casual Fridays as well (e.g. jeans, button-up/polo).
Attire for summer analysts in SF (Originally Posted: 06/07/2012)
I hear the general norm in San Francisco is wearing lighter colored suits with no ties. As a summer analyst do you think it would be best to wear a tie to the first day of work and keep doing so until I've been asked not to? I'm curious as to whether it would be wise to take off my tie without asking someone first.
Thanks!
NOT a wise idea. If you go in and absolutely no one else is wearing a tie, including every other intern, then take it off.
Who the fuck told you we wear light-colored suits?
Just wear navy or charcoal slacks with a slim-fit dress shirt every day, that's the norm in SF. Don't wear a tie, people WILL make fun of you for it if it's not your office's norm and you'll end up taking it off in the first 10 minutes anyway.
Ah, NYC got the best of me...
Man. Are you guys gonna be at the WSO conference?
Looks like I'ma gonna be the one guy there wearing a black suit.
ill be wearing jeans and flipflops with a dress shirt
whatever you decide wear, just wear it well and make it SUPER! something that makes everyone just say WOW and OMG OMG OMG! strut your STUFF for those boys and make em go crazy honey! a light colored suit would be a great start!

IMO, you should wear a suit and tie on the first day of work no matter what. If someone makes fun of you for it, then there's something wrong with them. Thereafter, just wear what's expected.
San Fran boys will be showing off their FABOLOUS outfits and manicures and $140 hair cuts. Thats the norm I hear.
Also remember that San Fran summer is kinda cold.
You heard wrong. The idea that San Franciscan corporate culture is more metrosexual or fashion-obsessed than New York is outrageous. Fix your operating assumptions.
How cold is "cold"? I'm gonna be there in August, and the last time I was in San Francisco I was about... 10, so I don't remember jack. Need to figure out how heavy a set of clothing to bundle into my luggage.
Depends on the bank. Talked to the head of my tech group last summer and he's implementing a full suit, no tie rule for senior bankers. For analysts, business casual is fine, generally. Just leave a navy blazer and a tie in the office.
August you can get away with shorts and tshirt....no where near 90s.
