Atypical Background, Post MBA chances of PE
Hello everyone,
Love this forum and the wealth of information available.
Just wanna check your opinions, I am attending LBS next year and post MBA I wish to work in PE. My prior 5 years working experience had been in the medical industry and I have no experience in finance at all. However I do have an undergrad first class honours degree in Economics.
May I check what actions I can take to give my self the best chance of:
1. getting a PE job post MBA (likely in medical industry)
2. getting more exposure/experience/boost my CV to closer approach my goal
3. best companies to network for healthcare related PE
Thank you!
Best regards,
Hamster
Are you a UK/EU citizen or "international"?
Look into Centerview Partners. Hiring healthcare bankers like mad. Advisory stuff but if you are bright, know healthcare they might look at you
Chances are slim - nearly impossible. You NEED transaction experience. Best bet would be to get IB or PE internships and then get an IB job post MBA in a healthcare group. After a few years of transaction experience, move to a healthcare focused PE firm. No (reputable and successful) PE firm will hire a person that has remotely no finance experience.
I never get why people proclaim it's next to impossible to get into PE, especially from a top global school like the one you're claiming.
If you haven't started reaching out to alumni, then you're behind the curve. You should have also had a summer internship lined up.
I'm not sure where LSE is at in proximity to the financial district in London, but you should try to find some funds close to the school that you can intern at while you're in your studies.
It's not impossible. I've seen a number of people do it, and actually beat out dudes that had prior PE experience. You just have to have an extra hustle and WORK at it.
It's relatively common in Europe for PE firms to recruit IBD associates so with the OP's lack of finance experience, I don't see any other way he could get into PE. So first step would be placing in a top healthcare IBD group and try to move after 18-24 months. the obvious drawback is that 2 years out your MBA, you would get hired in a pre-MBA position, but it is otherwise next to impossible to get a partner-track post MBA PE position without any finance / transaction experience.
