Job as a Business Analyst? (Originally Posted: 12/21/2014)
Hi all,
I am currently going through the interview process for a BA position with a large wealth management company. The role itself would involve mainly working with IT teams in providing business analysis support for user inquiries, user/business unit applications.
I graduated about 1.5 years ago from a non target, and am working on level 3 of the CFA. I currently work as an analyst on the portfolio team of an investments regulator. Long term goal is to work as an investment analyst and so currently would like to get into other related investment management roles, ER or banking. I have been trying to break in for a while but cannot secure anything yet.
I never considered a role as a BA however the position appears to offer a good opportunity to diversify my skill set and I would be working on some interesting projects in the realm of investment management. Also since I am currently getting hosed in terms of salary - this would offer a substantial pay increase.
Essentially my question is: would working as a BA in this capacity rule me out for any potential banking or ER jobs? I should have all three levels of CFA completed within the year as well as considering enrolling in a part time Master of Finance program beginning in July with a target school which would probably be my best bet at going through some solid recruiting.
Thanks in advance ladies and gents.

Hi,
I have a Masters in Finance degree with a summer internship at a retail brokerage firm. After actively searching for a job, I have landed up with an offer for a Business Analyst position in a financial services firm. The work is not related to coding and at the same time its not directly related to finance either.
I am passionate about working in finance, equity research specifically. Do you experienced people out there think that I can make a switch from a BA position into a financial analyst position after a years experience. I am also planning to take CFA Level I coming June.
Any inputs are much appreciated.
Thanks very much.
What are your creds?
I am sorry. What do you mean by creds.
did you do the MFE at UofT?
I was at IIT chicago

I have seen a lot of honest and practical career advice in this forum. I work for a non-financial firm in NYC as an IT Project Manager. I am interested in an IT business analyst role on wall street. I am currently reading Hull's derivatives book. I am also reading about FX (babypips, investopedia et al) and Fabozzi (fixed income). I am also very up to date with the markets and the economy in general. I have 10+ years of IT experience (technical and managerial). What financial areas are good to target for an IT business analyst role. Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions.
