binary banker is funny in his own way. what diminishes the site is the useless, uninformed opinions of HS and college kids giving opinions about working in finance.

I am afraid to admit that I am indeed a useless, uninformed college kid, hoping to one day give opinions about working in finance, and will take any advice I may get ;).

you may be uninformed but you are probably not useless. here's some advice: consider alternatives to this shrinking industry. the pay and abundance of jobs are not going to be like what it was in the last decade, and won't be for a long time. we will be returning to the early 90's equilibrium where the people who went into banking were slightly masochistic finance nerds who really are terribly underpaid given the brutal work-life non-balance.

The thing is that that is exactly the type of person I am. I thrive on long hours and getting beaten down, because it makes me work harder. When I was in high school, I spent a summer working as an assistant to a carpenter in the mornings, and as a cashier in the afternoons/evenings. 80 hours a week for 2.5 months. And I'm sure anyone with whom I've had a conversation with here, would tell you that I am a nerd as well (conversing regarding industrial revolution economics and whatnot). The fact that it is difficult to be successful at does not bother me, in fact it sparks my competitive nature.

That is what drives me, and if I get my shot I will kill it. The money, the prestige, the movies, the books, etc., do not drive me, it's my competitive nature that does. I want to do this because it is perhaps the hardest occupation to not only get into but to be successful and persevere at right now, in this day and age. I have some opportunities ahead of me right now to get into the business, and I will do my best to pursue them. I guess the best way to describe how I approach life is by this picture, which hangs above my desk in my apartment. My uncle hung it in his office, and the first time I saw it, it made sense to me instantly.
