Capital Fund Raising / Bus. Dev

Hello all,

Recently I've grown curious about the asset raising role within VC, Hedge, and Private Equity funds. From my knowledge, I understand that there are individuals responsible for capital raising and acquiring new business from institutional or high net worth investors during the expansion or inception of a new fund. Although I've met and known a few individuals involved with such a role at higher levels, I never quite understood their path or the type of individual that typically enters such a role.

I feel there are many entry level analyst rotation programs that exist that place people on the path of managing the execution and strategy of an actual fund or equity analyst etc... but have rarely heard about opportunities to embark on such a capital raising path at the onset of ones career. Are the individuals involved with these roles coming from a more banking / analyst background? Or more from a sales/marketing background?

Any information people could shed about such a position and what it would entail would be appreciated. Thank you,

Typically a sales/marketing background. Larger PE/HF/AM firms will have their own marketing departments comprised of a few people. You can apply to them either out of undergrad or after a few years doing sales at an ibank. There are also placement agents which serve as outsourced marketers for smaller funds, you can contact them and see if they have something entry level.

If you are really, really good; you can actually get equity in the firms you work for. This business is all about relationships and the ability to raise capital.

Thanks for your response. Are there any back door possibilities? For example, if I can prove I have the skill set via raising funds and managing relationships via maybe a Charity Foundation that I'm involved with as well as demonstrate a competent ability to understand the actual financials and fundamentals of the fund itself, do you have any recommendations on individuals steps to move toward this direction? This is something I'm passionate about and quite interested in exploring so it will be difficult for me to back down to any road block.

Thank you for your insight.
