Cornell Hotel for IB? (vs. UMich Econ [currently])
Hi guys,
I’m currently a freshman at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. I’m really interested in investment banking, and know how much politics goes into where you go to school (target vs. semi-target, etc.) when it comes to getting interviews internships, interviews, offers, and so on.
I’m applying to the Ross School of Business at the end of this year. If I get in, then I’ll earn the BBA degree through them. They have solid placement in IB from what I hear.
If I don’t get into Ross, I’ll be in Michigan’s LSA school, and I’ll probably end up pursuing an Econ degree, which I really don’t want to do.
My plan is to apply to transfer to other schools, Cornell being one of them, at the same time I apply for admission to the Ross program. Hopefully if I don’t manage to get into Ross, I’ll have at least gotten admitted into another semi-target/target program somewhere else.
I’m particularly drawn to Cornell because of it’s atmosphere. Even though it’s not in a city like Ann Arbor, the feeling on campus/throughout the town is very similar to that of Michigan, so that’s not an issue.
After researching the different schools (and seeing that the AEM program’s admit rate is VERY low), I was intrigued by the School of Hotel Administration. It seems like it would be such a fun degree to earn. I’ve had some experience in the restaurant industry in the past, and while I want to pursue a career in finance, it seems like Cornell vouches for Hotelies’ success in realms outside of hospitality.
My real question is…
If I was to be denied from Ross but accepted into Cornell’s Hotel program, would it make more sense from an IB standpoint to study Hotel Administration at Cornell rather than Econ at Michigan?
Sorry for the length of this, I just wanted to cover all bases. I’d appreciate any insight. Thanks!

looks like Cornell's program does/has placed IBD before. we know for sure that Econ in Michigan will with good networking. assuming cost is the same, I would rather take the Cornell name on my resume, although it's not as big a player as you might think.
Hotel places well into IB (as do all the schools, even human ecology sends kids to BB IBD). It all comes down to whether you are willing to 1) get a sufficiently high GPA and 2) put in the effort to network. If you don't do both then it won't matter what school you go to or transfer to.
Fun fact: Hotel School offers more finance classes than AEM does. Plus you take classes where you learn how to suck up to people. Networking is literally part of the curriculum...
Is ILR a crazy level easier to get into? Obviously "apply where you fit best," is still relevant, but if I can transfer internally, is there a significant difference in applying to ILR vs Hotel as a transfer?
I have lots friends who transferred into ILR and lots who transferred into hotel. I think those are two of the most transfer-friendly schools at Cornell. I might worn against applying to ILR but then transferring internally into Hotel. Although Hotel does offer a bunch of finance classes, you might not have time to take all of them and also fulfill all the bull shit hospitality class reqs as well if you're spending a semester in ILR before going to Hotel. Also you can't internally transfer into AEM if youve already externally transferred into Cornell. Feel free to PM me with any other questions.
Gr8. I got monkey shit for no apparent reason and helping out someone in need by saying things as they are.
It's all about the individual... if you don't do the things that allows you to stand-out (sufficiently high GPA, networking, getting relevant internships), you won't get into IBD whichever school you attend.
In this particular scenario (both good schools), take the course that you have the most interest in, crush it, and look to join student clubs and relevant internships as early as possible. It seems like you have an interest in hospitality, so just go ahead with it (Cornell).
If you are accepted into Ross, then to be honest I don't see much marginal benefit to transferring to Cornell hotel.
If you don't get into Ross, then I would transfer to Cornell hotel. That program has plenty of relevant finance courses to take and places into IB.
If you think you're qualified to get into both programs, then I would also look into applying to Georgetown. Phenomenal placement.
This is awesome feedback and I genuinely appreciate it. I'll look into Georgetown too. I was initially deferred from Penn and then declined for freshman admissions last year, so I might try my hand there once more for CAS, too.
Is it worth it to go all out and apply to places like Northwestern and Duke, too?
NW it all depends though Cornell, Georgetown & Ross all trump NW in IB placement. Duke places really well and is on par with Georgetown and trumps Ross & Cornell by a little bit. Apply to all the above schools, get offers and take your pick based on fit, finances & location.
Would you say that Georgetown Econ is a better choice for transfer than their business program? And what is a great boost for a hotel application? I think I can get a hospitality-related job this summer in my hometown...
I'll give you some bananas to offset that if you can answer the question prior to your last 2 posts :D
Georgetown's business program consistently places very well in IB. Obviously, its best to be in the business school over economics if you are keen on IB in the future. Therefore, Georgetown Econ is not a better choice when compared with the business program at Georgetown. I am not sure about the hotel application but I would tend to believe a hospitality-related job this summer in your hometown will certainly add to your chances if you want to transfer to Cornell's Hotel Administration program in the near future. Hope this helps. GL.
