So I don't know much about NYC and am moving there pretty soon. I found a place for cheap in the Eats village( Think Avenue B). Is that area safe ? Some of it looked pretty sketchy but that could also be because having spent a lot of time in the Midwest everything about New York looks dirty. What do you guys think?

Alphabet city is sketchy. Anything including 1st ave and further east, south of 20th street is not an ideal area...
It's not that sketchy, it's just less gentrified, and a few more homeless ppl are out and about. I have friends all around Ave B, been out there late at night, it's fine. Just don't give anyone the stink eye. Be aware it's not the cleanest part of NYC, but it's definitely not the worst or most unsafe.
It's very live-able, just not ideal. Keep transportation in mind though, you don't want to take a bus in NYC, ever. Make sure there is a train very close to you.
It's not all that sketchy, just like fangoria said. Just a few more homeless people, but very much livable.

Suffering through NYC traffic is a pain. You'd much rather take a train which although not 100% reliable, is significantly better. Besides, anything worth going to in Manhattan has a train nearby, just check out the MTA website.
That being said, you will probably be taking a train at some point in your commute, it's very rare that someone takes a bus to work in NYC. Hence, you will be transferring from bus to train. The overhead involved in transferring is huge. Walking time combined with waiting time is an extra 15 minutes, at least. Hence, a 5 minute bus ride can turn into 20 extra minutes due to the bus. 20 minutes of additional commute time is a lot.
Another reason is the volatility in commute time due to taking the bus. A 5 minute bus ride can be anywhere between 3 minutes and 45 minutes, depending on the traffic and time of day. That makes it almost impossible to appropriately approximate and schedule things when you're taking the bus.
And to all the non-NY'ers thinking that you will always be taking cabs, keep the traffic in mind. During rush hour, trains are much faster than taxis.

If you are talking about the lower eastside, Avenue A and B on Houston isn't bad. The projects are located at Avenue D (Been there, made sure I never starred at people or even look at them). You could say Avenue A and B is primarily white. Avenue D is primarily black and hispanic. Don't worry though, lower eastside isn't remotely close to Far Rockaway or South Bronx. Go to Queensbridge, largest projects in all of NYC (went there to check it out).
stuyvensant town is a good place to live I guess...quite a few middle-class families are living there, and there is this nice park. Also, you'll see police cars patroling the park in the night, so I assume it's safe. aaaa and the 1st avenue L train is a 5min walk at most.
Forgot to mention, C and D Avenue is far from the nearest subway station. Also, the bus thing is true unless you are in the other boroughs.
Stuyvesant Town is tight as hell. Really nice facilities (basketball courts, nice park, nicely kept area) and from what I hear, utilities are included in your rent.
south of 110 street, and some would say 125th street in manhattan is safe everywhere. Sure LES and EV are grungy and dirty looking, but thats the character of the neighborhood. They are filled up with young douchebaggy financial professionals just like every other neighborhood.
Relax...its a nice area, cool restaurants and bars, the only downside is its far as hell from the subway...which youll need and want.
you hear about people getting stabbed in alphabet city, but just don't walk around alone late at night.
Which is another reason why you want to live close to a subway station.
Or just carry a bigger knife.

rent is cheap(er) and the place isnt terrible. plus theres lots going on when i walk downstairs. oevrall i would say it isnt bad. i would carrry weapons but being brown and all i dont wanna be mistaken for a terrorist.
I live right near 14th st ave B (in stuytown) and there's no danger whatsoever. If you go south of 14th st it may start to get sketchy, same w/ east of Ave B, but other than that it's fine. Stuytown is nice in that all utilities but cable/phone is included, but prices are still pretty high. I pay $1400/mo for the main bedroom in a converted 1BR -> 2BR, approx 700sq ft apt. Stuytown is nice tho, very residential and family-friendly inside the 25 square block complex. I suggest an apt not facing 14th (or 1st ave) if you choose to live here tho, as street noise can be a problem.
