Does anybody have experience with getting a work permit for the UK for a summer internship. How long does it take? What the process is?

I am a U.S. citizen going to summer in the U.K. as well. My bank has hired a third-party legal team to work on my visa process.
First, your bank has to issue you a CoS through the third-party legal team. That costs 170 pounds but my bank is reimbursing it.
Second, you have to complete an online application form (http://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/ApplyNow.aspx) and have the third-party legal team check it before you submit and pay (it costs about $388 for a U.S. citizen but my bank's reimbursing me)
Third, you need to make an appointment for the required biometric test at your assigned U.K. embassy/consulate.
Fourth, at the embassy, you also need to formally submit your application along with supporting documents and etc. in addition to the biometric test.
I know that it takes about 3 to 5 weeks from the Fourth stage. But if your assigned embassy/consulate is in (NYC/Boston/Phila) area, it could take much longer upward of 8 to 10 weeks...i am just past the second stage and it's taken me 2 month (my bank's been slow)...
hope this helps.

btw,
also, i had to pass the background check before all this. I was stuck between the first and the second stages...and later found out that that was because they were still doing the background check.
