GMAT Score Expiration
Hey everyone-
I understand that there is a running clock on gmat scores, but wanted to seek the advice of some monkeys who have applied to B School recently and thus have a better grasp...
For example, I took GMAT ins Feb 2010. Thus my score is valid until Feb 2015. The question is, what does that mean from an application standpoint? Am I OK to apply in Fall 2014 for a 2015 start date with a score that will expire in February? What happens if a school has not decided on my app status and the score expires- would my app be dropped?
Apologies if this is a dumb question, but at an inflection point in my career path and trying to plan ahead appropriately. Thanks!
DISCLAIMER: I'm still in school, so take this with a grain of salt.
I am getting ready to take the GMAT later this year, and I was told that, as long as the GMAT score is still viable when you submit the app, that it would be acceptable throughout the process. So, if you were to submit in January 2015, and were wait listed until after February, then your score would still be accepted.
The b-school will specify that for xyz-year/round the GMAT must have been taken after abc date.
Your GMAT score must still be good upon the official start date of the program...i.e. you need to apply for the class entering Sept 2014 if your exam expires 02/2015.
I am pretty sure at least a few of the M7 require it be valid at application date. However, some make no mention (that I can find quickly). Also interested.
Some schools require your GMAT to be valid when you apply, whereas others require it to be valid when you matriculate.
From HBS' site, it looks like my Feb 2010 score will be good to apply for two more years (assuming the policy does not change, the class beginging in Aug 2014 will require a score from Jan 1 2009 or later, and MBA class that begins Aug 2015 will require applying with a Jan 1 2010 or later score...)
That said, sounds like that's not true at all schools so I need to dig a bit more into my target list to see where they stand on the topic. Thanks for the input everyone.

GMAT and GRE Tests
–What is the latest date test scores will be accepted? When submitting your application, you may report the unofficial GMAT or GRE score given on the day of the test, or your official score if you have received it. These are the only scores that the Admissions Board acknowledges. Your official score report may arrive from Pearson (for the GMAT) or ETS (for the GRE) after the deadline dates, and this score will be used for verification purposes. GMAT and GRE scores are valid for five years. Please be advised that in order to apply for admission in Fall 2013, GMAT scores must be dated January 1, 2008, or more recently. Please note that the HBS code for the GMAT is HRLX892. The HBS code for the GRE is 4064. For more information on the GMAT, please visit www.gmac.com. gmat score expiration vs. b-school app timing? (Originally Posted: 08/17/2011)
Hey y'all,
Been a bit confused about a logistical issue. I know that GMAT scores are said to be valid for 5 years, but how does that play in to the business school application cycle? For example, if I had just taken the GMAT in June 2011, when would be the latest time I could enter business school using that score?
To break it down, at which of the following dates does my GMAT score need to be valid:
a) Application deadline b) Admit/deny date c) Matriculation date d) Other?
And as a corollary - what are the approximate dates of each of the above?
Thanks a bunch - been wondering about this for a while and it will probably affect certain decisions I make in the next couple of years.

My guess would be sometime between a and b, when they actually review your application.
I can't remember exactly but application deadlines (ballpark) for first round/early admission are usually around october if you're applying for fall next year. Second round deadlines are usually late november-december. Applying during later rounds would probably be a bad idea, so I never even looked.
I am not certain but I am pretty positive its Matriculation date
application date i believe. check with the schools can simply email and find out rather than asking a bunch of yazoos on the net :P
So mean.
Thanks guys - seems to be some disagreement though. Does anyone have direct knowledge of this?
Why don't you just pick any school and call up the admissions office directly? Or email them with this question, I'm sure they would get back to you.
Alrite, alrite, I concede my laziness.
For anyone else who's wondering, I checked out Wharton and NYU, and one said the score had to be valid as of the application deadline, the other was as of the day you actually submit the application - don't remember which was which.
When do gmat scores actually expire? (Originally Posted: 01/27/2014)
Hi - longtime lurker, first time poster.
I'll be applying to bschool in the fall of 2014. I did reasonably well on the GMAT (740), but took it in early September of 2009. Guidance on the 5 year validity window is unclear; for some schools, it seems like you have to have taken it between the R1 deadline 5 years ago and the present day. Others don't offer much guidance at all.
Can anyone clear up whether early September 2009 will still be valid for this fall, or should I take it anyway just to show I'm still fresh?
Thanks.
It totally depends on the school. I took mine in 2010. If I waited one more year, it would not be valid at a number of programs to which I was applying, and it would be at others. I'd check with your programs of interest; if it's not available on the website, just drop an email to the admin office.
Thanks, dew2229, I'll reach out to different programs and report back what I hear in case anyone else has the same question.
has the GMAT undergone changes since then? if not, it should be fine, since it's still within 5 years
I've asked a few schools about this, and they've all said that you just need to apply before the score expires. So you should be good as long as you apply before September. But to be sure you should probably ask the specific schools you're applying to.
It doesn't matter if the GMAT has undergone changes. As long as the score is still valid within the five year range, the old test results are perfectly valid. I took the test prior to the new section being added and applied afterwards --- didn't matter at all.
