GPA and the power of the MD
I was wondering how important is GPA in terms of getting through to the superday? Here is some context. I go to a target school, and am majoring in Art History with a GPA of 3.6. A MD was kind enough to vouch on my behalf, and I think I have a high probability of getting the Superday at the BB. However, I was just worried that my low GPA and my non-finance background could put me at a significant disadvantage when it comes down to who makes the cut? How much power does the MD have in terms of pushing me to "make it" through the Superday even if the associates/analysts/VP interviewing me may prefer another candidate?
If you make it to the superday then it will be determined by how you do on the interviews. Not on your GPA.
This and only this. The GPA only holds the purpose of screening for the first round, usually. Unless theres a rare case when two candidates are somehow like identical in how they performed/fit/personality and then maybe, only maybe, would the higher GPA matter
but basically after the resume screening, you can wipe your ass with your gpa (that is until PE recruiting comes along! :) )
Would worry about the actual interview as was said above. Also, a 3.6 isn't a GPA to be worried about- nobody is going to ask you questions about why it is 'low.' At almost every school that is a solid GPA (at some more solid than others but still).
great, thanks for the insight. as a follow-up, how much power does a MD have on hiring decisions? Can he "overrule" decisions that the interviewers make? There seems to be just so many variables that make it hard to succeed in the superday. i.e. if the interviewers don't like you, they'll find a way to ding you no matter what
