Yeah I don't read it anymore because it's become a total parody. Lot of fluffy articles that add no value to MBA applicants or those wanting to learn more about schools and industries. John Byrne is also a huge troll for Booth (great school obviously, not bashing it), and it's gotten a bit obnoxious since it's so blatant.

VodkaGuru:

The site relies too much on admissions consultants. In addition, I wouldn't say he's a Booth troll, but a HBS troll. Just read the number of articles the past week that involves HBS.

I disagree. P&Q is biased towards the coastal schools. IIRC Booth ranks #1 in a couple of rankings- Northwestern ranks pretty darned high too, but because it's not an East Coast school and it's not Stanford, WSO, P&Q, and the whole peanut gallery out there completely passes them over. Hell, WSO will tell people that the choice between Columbia and Booth is debatable.

Booth takes more students and creates more valuable employees. On the social value front, it probably does deserve to rank #1, and Byrne isn't wrong playing it up as a #3 school.

After HSW, the other M7 schools are roughly equal depending on your industry preference, location, cultural fit, etc. No one actually believes that Booth is the #1 b-school in the country; it's a damm good school along with the likes of wharton, columbia, kellogg, sloan.

How does Booth create more valuable employees? Do you have any data to back this up?

@"IlliniProgrammer" The choice between Booth and Columbia is debateable. Booth is a great school but to say that it is significantly better than Kellogg/Columbia and is a #3 school (better than Wharton) is incorrect.

At times, P&Q has informative articles but this is clearly not the case here. I too have noticed a little Booth bias (even though Booth is a great school). I mean comeon, Booth is a Mercedes but Kellogg is a Volkswagen? And Tuck is a Swedish car and Haas is a Toyota?

"...many drivers would still kill to say “I drive a Porsche” even if it’s just a Cayenne (i.e. a Toyota SUV with a Porsche stamp)"

"I’m sure there are some laid back and friendly BMW drivers, but they seem to be drowned out by the sheer number of a**holes"

I'm sorry but this article is not funny nor does it add any real value for candidates.

I have a lot of love for Booth, but the bias has gotten a little obnoxious. I have seen a trend among some Boothies (albeit a small minority) who trumpet the bogus BW and Economist #1 ranking as a basis for Booth being superior to other M7 schools. One recent Booth alum even called CBS a "safety" school, which got me laughing pretty hard. It's sort of like the former fat geeky girl who loses weight, wears contacts, and gets a boob job, and then proceeds to make fun of the ugly girls.

Yea that article is ridiculous. I would say its pretty demeaning to a lot of those schools too. I found the quote " Haas is like Toyota, much like Stern is like Honda. It’s for the practical minded who simply want to get a good degree so they can get a better job. Nothing more or less than that" Haas and Stern are great schools and to compare them to Hondas and Toyotas is insulting.

Considering Alfred Sloan, the namesake of Sloan - MIT, rose to fame as the CEO of General Motors, I'd say that this article misses when it dubs Sloan an Audi.

Let's face it - there is only so much "news" to cover in the MBA world. P&Q makes a weak attempt to cater to the larger aspiring MBA community while devoting much of its time to the highbrow schools. In order to maintain relevance and generate content to drive eyeballs to the site, everything must be reported. Rankings, Job Placement Stats, Reshuffling Administrations - it all must be reported, regardless of how relevant it is to the grand scheme of things. When there is nothing trivial to report on, P&Q turns to these hokey stories about comparing MBA schools to Automobile Brands.

It is true at Booth has made some amazing gains the past few years. I think anything that threatens the HSW trifecta causes people who are used to the historical perception to jump up in arms. Thus, the constant going back and forth on Booth's position within the M7.

Both options are debatable because fit should be the deciding factor, not because of difference in opportunities or program quality. These are 3 of the very best schools in the world that will give you ample opportunities in most industries. However, Wharton still has the highest pedigree and prestige of the three whereas the difference between Booth and Columbia is not as significant. If you prefer CBS and it's program, it would be foolish to go to Booth because it MAY be VERY SLIGHTLY "better". I personally like CBS more and because of that, would pick it over Booth any day of the week.

Yes, Wharton has historical prestige, but I would argue Booth has the same level of modern prestige as Wharton, meaning many applicants are viewing Wharton and Booth on the same level. I find it interesting that of all B-school debates, the Booth versus Wharton debate always comes up on top. When there is great debate on a subject matter, it only means times are changin'. ;-)

Oh, I did not realize that P&Q was the Moses of MBA programs, the sole arbiter of truth. All sarcasm aside, booth and columbia compete for cross-admits while most people still choose wharton over booth/columbia. Yes, some do turn down wharton for booth, especially if they get a generous scholarship (courtesy of david booth's $300 million donation), but I also know some who turned down wharton for columbia for various reasons. The notion that booth is "superior" to wharton/columbia/kellogg/sloan is propaganda and not rooted in actual data or facts. Now ten years from now, who knows what will happen.
