HBS Students' Attractiveness: Discrimination?

Are there ugly HBS students? From the YouTube videos I've seen it appears that everyone is attractive.

Isn't that discrimination? What does being attractive have to do with being a future business leader?

WayToWealth:

The individuals who work the hardest to get into the top school also work hard outside of the classroom (ie gym).

That's part of it. Also ugly people make crap videos that no one watches.

On the flip side there's tons of people who sacrifice their health/exercise in order to maximize grades/career/etc. Just look at all the first year IB analysts/associates whose pants don't fit after 6-12 months.

Let's also add this. As you get older and obtain more money, you'll be able to take care of yourself better - both nutritionally & physically (fitness wise). HBS people tend to be relatively successful individuals pre-HBS so they had the capacity to take care of themselves.

I realize that's kind of a vague/unsabtantiated statement but objectively true nonetheless.

Assuming you are right that HBS students are attractive (and I think any southern public university would dispute that), I would say you are probably not getting the source of the discrimination right :)

Take the following points:

  1. Wealthy people tend to be better looking than poor people. (think braces, teeth whitening, nose jobs, better diet, gym memberships, expensive clothes, etc.)

  2. Harvard Business School students tend to be wealthy people (or from wealth, etc.)

  3. Therefore, HBS students on the whole are better looking.

My personal opinion is that you are simply biased. You probably worship HBS (hence the source of this thread: you watching youtube videos about HBS) and so knowing these people go there puts you in a sense of awe. If, however, I took these same people and put them in videos for the local regional unranked public university part-time MBA and put them in shabbier clothes, I doubt you would come on here saying "OMG the peeps at [insert regional unranked public university part-time MBA] are soooo hawt."

All we need to do is show a little class, a little sophistication, and we’re in like a dirty shirt.

That's even worse. So in order to become wealthy/successful you have to attend a school like HBS. But to get admitted into HBS in the first place you have to be born wealthy. Doesn't that make the USA a caste system? What happened to economic mobility?

Going to HBS isn't required for economic mobility. One can "move up" without any education at all. I'm not saying it is right, but just because we have economic mobility, doesn't mean all opportunities are open to everyone. Also, being wealthy isn't a requirement to go to HBS, but they are probably correlated.

Has anyone that responded actually gone to Bschool? Let me tell you from first hand experience, people at top schools are below average looks. By far the best looking people are the wives of students. Of course there are are a handfull of attractive girls but by large you will disappointed with the talent, or at least I was. People joke, well yea she is school hot, but not actually hot.

Well, it's tempting to think that everyone at HBS looks good (you know.. :) ) but the people I knew looked pretty normal. I tend to agree with grouse and blackdog. It's a lot about impression - how we dress, how we take care of ourselves, what background we come from (confidence counts too for looks or at least how they are perceived, and well, let's say there's no shortage of confidence at HBS).. so maybe that explains the impression people get.

Is it discrimination if HBS were to favor attractive students. technically yes. Is it illegal? Not in the slightest bit. In this case just use your brain and think... Attractive people make better sales literature.

People who have been considered to be "very attractive" their whole lives tend to develop higher self confidence than most, although that's not the case for all, but by having a strong sense of self confidence the ability to set and achieve high goals becomes more likely. In addition to that, most attractive people (not all) have strong/consistent workout routines, this is relevant because anyone (not just attractive people) who has a strong/consistent workout routine will usually develop a strong work ethic outside the gym either in academics or work/job/sports/etc.... If you add a strong work ethic to an already high level of self confidence the chances of being successful usually increases.

The underlying point that I'm trying to make is that being very attractive usually correlates with a high degree of self confidence, and as well know having confidence in yourself is essential to being successful.

In a class of 950 students, you are bound to see some very attractive people. I know a few girls there who are legit hot, even by real world standards. Most however are just average but dress well and take care of themselves. You will see very few overweight students at HBS or any top b-school for that matter. So I think the median HBS girl is more attractive than the median girl out in the real world, but the top end of the tail isn't as impressive. The bottom end also isn't as bad either.

By and large, I think HBS and the other top b-schools attract some of the most charismatic dynamic young people in the world. Success breeds more success and confidence, and elite MBA admissions looks for winners. As Dee Leopold, the dean of admissions at HBS once said, "we accept students who are driving porsches, so they can leave HBS driving Ferraris." (that is a metaphor for those of you who might take it literally)

wow! If she really said that, she is so full of hubris it's disgusting.

making a one eight zero.

^^ this is pretty funny coming from someone that doesn't go to bschool. So much kool-aid and fuzzy truths in those two paragraphs.

I'm never disappointed by his post's...always makes me smile :)

ke18sb, I think you overestimate the attractiveness of the median woman. I have a lot of friends at HBS and have been there many times, and yes, the median girl there is not that bad. I stand by my assertion that there are very few overweight people at top b-schools since they tend to be A-types who work hard in their professional and personal lives.
