Investec Securities?
Hey,
Does anyone know anything about Investec? It's a UK / S. African bank. I've got a trading interview there later this week.

They are huge in South Africa, never heard of anyone working for them in the U.S
The position would be in NY, trading S. African equities ... just trying to determine if they are legit, as I've showed up to chopshop-esque interviews before
Well I dunno about the U.S, but in South Africa its one of the better names in the finance/banking sector. You could probably go as far as to say its the BB of South Africa
I've worked on a few deals with them in South Africa. Can't speak for the trading operations however their deal financing guys were thoughtful and impressed me.
Not a chop shop. Proably worth it in this economy.

Anybody ever worked or dealt with Investec? I know they have decent presences in South Africa, London and Australia but in terms of recent deals etc, i'm coming up blank. I know part of the reason is that alot of their work is for private companies and / or high net worth individuals but i'm sure they've worked on some recent public deals as well. In Australia, i know they're going after alot of the ex Allco + Babcock & Brown infrastructure assets but that's it.
Any experiences to share - positive or negative?
They are very good in Africa, but they are definately 3rd tier in Europe.
Just my 2c.
I was on a mezz debt financing deal during my time at RBS in London that fell through. It was a for an offshore wind farm, which is kind of like betting on a bet. It was really risky so we passed. Then a couple weeks later the JV that Investec was running went belly up. Not sure if that is indicative of what they do, since it was one of their private equity funds, but they seemed kind of cowboyish in the project finance market.
Any other thoughts on the culture or people? Hours and comp?
Investec London - Rep? (Originally Posted: 12/06/2017)
Evening all,
Currently doing the milkround for London Analyst gigs - any thoughts on Investec in terms of rep, exit ops, comp, flow etc?
I'm looking at M&A although I think they might mix it up with broking and ECM rather than having pure M&A roles - happy to be corrected.
Cheers
Meh. I could comment a little bit on the rep. I had a friend do an SA in their M&A division. He/she got interested in the area, but wanted to pursue “real” IBD afterwards at a BB/MM. On top of that half of the interns were hired through purely neputistic reasons—to the extent that they didn’t give out offers by default. Most people would probably be surprised they do IBD to begin with.
