Is there a name for these kind of people/scammers on Wall Street?
So just coming off a freshman year at a non target, I figured it would help to find an internship, any kind of internship at that point because almost no one recruits freshmen. So I came across Northstar Consulting Group, a sales and marketing agency. I sent them my resume and got called for an interview. Their office is located by Wall Street (Specifically on Broad street & Exchange Place, which is right there by the Hermēs store) and that sort of attracted me. The interview was straight forward, and the girl next to me was a recent college graduate from London who had previously worked with Nelson Mandella, a bit intimidating. Even still I got called for a second round, which was a day in the life of an employee. This is when I discovered what Northstar truly was, they make their employee's go door to door scamming people into switching their electricity provider (ConEd) over to Northstar's client, Liberty Power. Is this type of stuff common in the Financial District? It really pissed me off, I got the offer but turned it down. Here's their website if you're interested.
There are some scams out there. Generally they fall into two categories:
1) Cold calling / cajoling friends and family into purchasing "employer's" insurance/financial products/whatever (ex. Northwestern Mutual) 2) Fee-based "professional education" firms masquerading as HF/other types of job listing (examples escape me, but I've seen them on university job boards)
It's your call if you want to consider the unpaid cold-calling "internships" at Merrill/etc scams. But overall, there are a lot of BS/exploitative "opportunities" out there -- keep your eyes open. That said: you are not special, and nothing is below you. Don't get ripped off, but a shitty (non-scam) job is still a job.
