lunch meeting- taking too much time
So I'll be grabbing lunch today afternoon with a prominent fund manager. Through my networking I have noticed that I have a tendency to take up far too much of the other person's time - usually more than an hour, opposed to the standard 15min introduction. Although I greatly enjoy these conversations and wind up losing track of time, it has always been the case that the other person has to bring the convo to a closure. I can't afford to mess things up today, and I'm concerned about not promptly bringing the meeting to a closure so I would greatly appreciate any advice.
If they are willing to talk to you, just keep talking with them. Why worry? If they gotta go somewhere or don't want to talk to you, they'll say "well it was nice meeting you. good luck" and leave.
Just be happy they actually take time out of their day to talk with you.
I think you are lucky that they take their time to talk to you for 1 hr. That means they are somewhat interested in you.
I don't think you have to worry about ending it fast. If they end the conversation, it's okay as long as you say "thank you for your time blabla". I guess.
My contention is that you should always let the banker close the conversation. You want to talk to them as long as possible. If they find you uninteresting, they will ditch you in ten minutes anyway.
go read the book "never eat alone". Your intro/sell pitch should never be more than 30 seconds to 2 mins; people stop listening after 2 mins in general, and verbosity in an interview is an indication of lack of coherent and concise thought. remember, ATFQ (Answer The Fucking Question) and do so with brevity, silence can actually be a good thing.
Good Luck
if you get nervous just give him a kiss
These guys are used to working a room.. They'll leave subtle clues as to when they want to dip out.. Don't over stay your welcome.
Thanks for putting things to perspective- the meeting went well and since he was busy I grabbed coffee with him at his office instead of heading out for lunch. Regardless, we still chatted for about 45min.
