Mandatory field work in Senior year. Internship still possible?

I have a conundrum, gents. I am studying geology and economics, and to complete the geology side I have a mandatory (read: cannot get out of) field work class in my Senior year summer.

I hope to be involved in finance and business in the future (mining or energy, hence the geology). Is there any way to get a Junior internship, considering my six week field work retreat during that summer?

Alternately, are there any other ways to make up for not having said internship? I want to eventually start/fund mining operations, if it helps.

Thanks for any advice!

So you could get a night internship in banking if your resume, experience and prestige of school are perfect... But....

No matter what if you get a legit internship you must drop your geo major. Life is hard but thats the truth.

If you absolutely would rather die than drop your major, you can contact your department and see if you can delay the 6 week requirement to the next year? Then up your courseload so you free up time and hammer it out that way.

You'll get burned hard if you choose a GEO exchange over a Wall Street job... we won't think you're serious about wall street.

Good advice. Just to be clear I am not seriously considering getting into PE/IB until likely after an MBA, and if PE as a senior level lateral. Does this change anything? I know that it is quite possible to get into IB after MBA without an internship, does it change anything for PE lateral?

Little bit of advice for you. 1. Capitalize on your Geology degree. Attend the field course. And work for at least two years after school in that industry (sounds like you are focused on mining?) 2. Most mining or Oil&Gas companies are very familiar with summer field courses and will make every effort to work around them with summer internships. Shouldn't be a problem. 3. 2 yrs in O&G or mining will set you up extremely well for business school as they are increasing interested in those fields. 4. Graduating top MBA with technical experience puts you at: 95% chance landing energy/mining IBD, 50% chance landing energy/mining PE, 0% landing into energy/mining hedge fund
