McCombs for NY offices
Hi monkeys,
As a high school senior, this is the time where I have to choose which college to attend. Currently UT Austin McCombs is at the top of my list. However I was wondering if I had a good chance of making a NY BB from the business program. Keep in mind that getting to New York is of the utmost importance to me and I could not bear to work in Houston (no offense to Texans, I just consider NY to be a much better city overall). I don't mind working a bit harder for NY, it would concern me if it was too much of a hurdle. Should I stick with Austin or switch to another school?
I don't work in NYC, but logic dictates that if you know already without a doubt you want to be in NYC, I would aim to go to a target school closer to there.
Synergy_or_Syzygy That was my first inclination when applying to colleges, but the problem is that I don't think I have a good shot at getting into many of the good targets near New York. The only exception I can think of is Stern, which I probably have a decent shot at, but the lack of campus is a total deal breaker for me. I was hoping that Austin would give me a good shot at NY.
Personal experience, I found several UT Austin grads at all of the NY BBs/EBs on LinkedIn, but the ones I talked to said most recruiting is for Houston, and they networked into NY.
Apply to Michigan or UVA for a better shot at NY instead
There are UT grads at nearly every bank in NYC. If you don't get to New York from McCombs its certainly not because you attended Texas.

Thank you all for your advice. It seems that It'll be tougher to get an BB job in NY from Austin. In the case that I don't make it and have to stay in Houston, does anyone know how hard it would be to transfer to NY?
UT places well in NYC. Obviously they send more kids to Houston, but NYC is by no means a "reach" coming from UT. (SMU places well in NYC if you have considered that school)
If you do end up in Houston, I would say the easiest way to get up to NYC would be to do your two year analyst stint and look for buy-side opportunities in NYC. It's a bit more difficult doing 1 year of oil & gas banking and then trying to lateral into a different group. Definitely doable, just a bit more challenging.
I think this question needs some more info. What other schools have you got into? Based on that, UT Austin might still be your best bet for making it into NY Offices. Or perhaps there is a school that might be better, that us monkeys could advise you on. Some context will help clear this up.
