Meeting Contacts at Another Bank
So I'm a SA at a bank in NYC, and just wrapped up my first week of being with my group. While I like my bank and whatnot, I would like to keep in touch with some of my contacts at other banks, and to keep my options open for FT recruiting.
Is it appropriate to ask an analyst at another bank to grab coffee or a drink sometime? If so, how do you do this when you work such long hours? I realize they are just as busy, but if you can get their attention, how would you schedule something as a SA?
I realize this might sound a bit silly, but any input from current analysts or former SAs would be appreciated.
I know this is off topic, but how do you like it up to now? Are you at a BB? Let me guess...you just got back from the office :P
It's good - I mean the hours are going to be an adjustment for anyone coming from a college life schedule (ie 10hrs/wk of class, sleeping, partying, etc), but from just a week in, I feel like it's been rewarding. From a work standpoint, I've gotten a good amount of responsibility, from small parts of live deals to working solely with a director on a project.
I'm at a small but pretty well regarded MM bank.
How many hours are you currently pulling?
bump......I am curious about this as well. I thought doing this might give me ahead on FT recruiting, but it might also be a faux pas.
I actually think there's something in the contract that forbids you from "seeking other employment opportunities" during the tenure of your SA stint. At least, there was in mine -- a BB.
Could someone comment on this?
My SA contract said nothing of the sort. But even if it did, so what? The second your bankers or HR gets wind of you looking at other banks, chances are you've already substantially hurt your chances of getting the offer. Although banks undoubtedbly know SAs will explore their options after the offer's extended, banks usually won't give offers if there's an indication the SA has no intention of accepting.
^^ My point exactly - is it appropriate to try and meet during the internship, or even feasible given the hours?
One of the guys is a VP - I spoke with him a few times after I told them I had accepted somewhere else (I was on a hold position with them). He had actually come from my SA bank to where he was, and mentioned to stay in touch and all that. Maybe just an email explaining my progress?
