Mentor advice

Short back story... I have a friend on the trading floor whose wife also works on the trading floor. I approached him and asked if his wife would be willing to talk to me about how she started her career / got where she got / established herself. He said he thinks that she would and that she would probably be very complimented by it... so good.

Problem is I don't know how exactly to approach her. I want to send her a email, but every single one I draft comes across too formal. I can't figure how to write an email that is a happy medium inbetween formal and casual. All I really want is a few minutes of her time to talk to her about her career, how she got there and any advice she may have. She never takes lunch, but might be able to step away from the desk for a few minutes to meet with me.

Any advice would be appreciated. I've been procrastinating on this for awhile.

Just keep it simple.

Depending on how well you know her,

"Dear/Hello Jill,

I was talking with Jack(Husband's name) about breaking into ________. I admire how successful you have been in your career as well, and was wondering if you would be willing to sit down with me for (cup of coffee/lunch/etc) and give me a few pointers as to how to get my feet off the ground. I look forward to speaking with you, and thank you in advance for your help!"

Most people take too much time in writing these type of letters. Especially if you already have somewhat of a connection, just make sure you are grammatically correct and convey your message concisely and honestly. Don't add any unnecessary fluff, but it doesn't hurt to lay on the flattery, as the husband seems to have implied.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

"Who am I? I'm the guy that does his job. You must be the other guy."
