M&I was right: investment bankers do secretly want their own company

NachosMy (ex) boss worked basically until he had enough money to start his own business (startup) as well.

What type of firm did he start?

e-commerce startup

Yes, everyone wants to be in control of their own future, and the way to do that is to be your own boss. You can definitely do it with 50k. Hell, you could do it with 5k, if you subscribe to Tim Ferriss' ideas.
