Miami (OH) (free) versus NYU Stern 60k debt for undergrad finance
Hey all, essentially it comes down to going to Miami OH for free for undergrad or going to NYU stern for a significant amount of debt. I have visited both and definitely liked the Miami campus much better; however, I really would like to get a solid job in finance upon graduation. The competition at Stern is a little unsettling since I do not want to get a terrible GPA, and the no campus thing is not something I like. I really would appreciate any advice on the topic!

If you get into the honors program at Miami, you should go there. Not only do you admittedly like the campus better, but you're going for free. In 10-15 years when you've decided to not do Wall Street, but have savings and a similarly decent job, you'll thank me. Also, I know for a fact that banks out of Chicago recruit there. Work hard and enjoy yourself. You only do undergrad once.
Stern. It's an investment that will be well worth it.

Why did you even apply to Stern? You clearly sound like you have no desire to attend and do not like it. Doesn't make much sense to me how these are the only options but you didn't like NYU.

if you actually want to do finance it's stern and it's not even close at 60k. even at 150k it's probably not close.
If you don't like the no campus aspect of NYU, do not go. You'll be miserable.
And btw... the above posters are probably 100% correct in asking why you bothered to apply to Stern if you're not interested in attending. When you apply to Stern you HAVE to know what you're getting yourself into. It really is baffling.

Debt isn't as bad as people make it sound as long as you maximize your time in college.
I don't think this is emphasized enough. $60K in debt in grand scheme of things (i.e. your entire life) is not that much.

why does it matter where the OP applied? Apply everywhere - get your acceptances then realize wtf you wanna do... why live your life wondering "what if"... even if he saw the campus before the application he still knew the strength of their program with regards to recruiting so it adds to the pros and the cons... every school has pros and cons so get accepted first then analyze your options. Where he applied and why is totally irrelevant.
With regards to your questions - I would make a list of all the pros and cons for each school and really analyze it and think about your wants for the next 4 years of your life. Remember that if you are the "partying" type and wont focus on being in the top 5% of your class then you have a lot of competition at Stern and I would go to Miami. As much as I wish my undergrad had better recruiting there are a lot of benefits with going to other schools besides recruitment. Ya I had a much harder time breaking in but at the end of the day I had a great time at college (not saying you wouldn't at a target) and I can look at myself and say shit I worked my ass off to get where I am today (also not saying you wouldn't at a target - just a different feeling)
People are asking because on the surface, it appears to be a troll. There are plenty of business schools that are on par with Stern that also have campuses and greek life (U of Michigan, University of Virginia, Indiana, UT to name a few). I can't imagine they are that much more selective than Stern.

Stern without a question. You will get better pay, better contacts, and can pay back your loan quickly. Dont skimp on you education.
Can't speak for Stern but Miami is definitely on rise in banking. Just in the past few years they've become a target for JPM, William Blair, with a number of other banks. Not saying it's as strong as Stern but it is possible to get into IB from Miami if you set yourself up well. Not to mention you'll probably have a lot better time (holistic college experience) then in NYC at Stern. Go where you like it best and if you still want to go into banking you can make it happen.
The distractions at Miami are absurd (wild college town/Greek life, wide range of academic ability = mixed levels of ambition in student body) but if you identify early on what you'd like to be doing after college and are confident in your ability to stay focused then I couldn't recommend it more. There are IB jobs available, but a lot of smart kids get side tracked going out 4-5 nights a week and end up in middle office etc.
