How good are they? Are they a better opportunity than a traditional PE house?

MSIM
Is this a new group within the firm or are you referring to the Alternative Investment Partners (AIP) group outside of Philadelphia? The AIP group is a FoF.
As you might know MS had a significant PE business that was part of the Inst. Securities business but this group spun off from the firm a few years ago. It is now called MetalMark (I think). MSIM has been focusing on alternatives in a big way over the past few years so it doesn't surprise me that they would add a PE group.
In general, firms like MS are stable places to work but you probably won't make the same $$$ as you would at an independent PE shop. It really depends on the deal struck by the guys brought in to manage the business.
HF Guy,
Thanks for your comment! Yes, I was referring to the AIP group. I'm currently in IBD and thinking about moving either to a PE shop or a HF. Do you think the AIP group is a good move or would it be better to look for some other places? The job description at AIP looks more like due diligence and marketing than hard core financial structuring, which puts me off a bit, to be frank.
