even on here there have been a few posts about MS's failed real estate investments. however, at least in the RE industry it's possible that MS still carries the halo of its former prestige, the reputation of a selective and sought-after employer etc. so that it could still look good to work there for a couple years.
as far as placement at Blackstone RE, they might be looking for real estate M&A/IBD experience, but i still would not be surprised in the least to see someone go from MS real estate merchant banking to Blackstone RE.
thanks. so if i want to go into a top re pe shop like blackstone, would it be better to go to a real estate ibd group rather than ms merchant banking group? what are the best real estate ibd groups out there? goldman?
they just raised a new $4bn fund, so they will be looking to deploy that capital in the next few years. despite the recent bad press, it still would be an interesting job.
If I'm not wrong, I remember talking to a MS RE IBD guy and he said something about MS RE program is a rotation between IBD and merchant banking, which is definitely interesting (the guy is going to KKR/BX/GS PIA)
If you're interested in real estate finance in the long term there really aren't that many better groups to be in for an analyst position (if any). If you're more interested in general corporate finance / want to do generalist PE I would stay away
I'm interested in real estate finance in the long-term. But below is the description of the job at MSREI. It's not IBD, but it's also not an acquisition role for PE, it's "fund management"... Will I come out with marketable skills to go into RE PE??
Overview As a member of Morgan Stanley’s Real Estate Fund Management team, this individual will play an integral role working with all senior staff members in fulfilling specific fund-level and broader investment management responsibilities. The primary responsibilities will include providing analytical support (cash flow modeling) for opportunistic real estate funds, preparing presentations for senior management and investors, conducting risk management activities and engaging in global real estate research functions.
The position will be for 2 years and provides a unique opportunity to engage in several critical aspects of Real Estate Private Equity ,working on a variety of transactions and business management and development initiatives. Financial problem solving, investor relations, contract negotiation/execution and overall portfolio and business management are among the critical skills needed. This position also provides the opportunity to work directly with senior financial and strategic decision-makers at one of the world’s largest Real Estate Private Equity firms.
Primary Responsibilities: • Conduct comprehensive financial analyses (cash flow projections, valuation and liquidity analyses, scenario planning) • Review and assist in preparation of strategic plans and quarterly investor presentation materials • Work directly with asset managers, acquisition and finance teams and senior management to incorporate investment-level activities in fund-level models and business plans • Work directly with senior management to analyze and develop relevant materials and presentations for Firm management • Perform global macroeconomic and regional, real estate specific research to evaluate and assess trends and develop investment themes • Provide risk management analytical support, including investment and fund level hedging and global insurance activities
If it isn't for an acquisitions analyst role my previous comment doesn't apply. I'm not familiar with that job function so take this with a grain of salt, but from that description my general advice would be to stay (far) away. But of course it depends on your other options
hm thanks. i am currently a 1st yr IBD analyst at a BB but looking to switch into real estate...
this is RE PE
i've interviewed for MS REI analyst position before
so if you want to do real estate private equity you are at the right place

another good question is, Could you really do better than this even if you wanted to, given the current market?
MS Merchant banking (RE) in Singapore (Originally Posted: 03/15/2011)
Hello,
Does anyone know anything about the MS Real Estate investment group in Singapore? I am trying to find out:
1) what the office does (PE, banking or lending), whether it will be a good learning experience for SA trying to go into PE in the future 2) reputation, size, culture
I know everyone says it is a bad idea to do internship in Asia for junior summer because it will be hard to stay in US for FT, but I am still interested in hearing any comments regarding this.
Any opinion will be deeply appreciated! Thanks!
