Most lucrative financial sales sector

Hello fellow Monkeys,

To kick this off, let me begin by mentioning that it took me about 6 months to land my current role. I started off right out of school in financial consulting -- It was easy to get at the time (obvious reasons), with some pretty crazy promises (what can I say..I was young and naive). About 6 months in, I decided that I didn't bust my butt at school to become a glorified insurance salesman and thus searched to get into institutional sales.

After a TON of failure I finally landed an equity sales assistant role at a boutique shop. At this company, you basically have to start in this role to get on a team on the desk (unless you have prior experience). I took the job willingly and have been here for just under a year now. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty miserable with where I am right now. I do like the people I work with (for the most part)...but there is a ton about this company that rubs me the wrong way, and without getting into specifics, I want out!

Now don't get me wrong, I do like the path I'm on. It interests me a lot and there is a lot of upside in a short amount of time. With that being said, I'm open to other types of financial sales which is why I'm asking you guys -- what is the most lucrative type of sales in the finance industry? Thank you and any other advice for how to land my next big gig would be a HUGE help.

You were doing equity research sales, right? What are some issues you are having with the company, the grass isn't always greener.

There is always a new hot product where people want to be. You can sell the most basic of cash equities all the way to the most exotic FI products if you're good you will make money, if not you won't have a job

Don't get me wrong, I really like the job I have and the people I work with. For example, I was receiving NON-STOP phone calls last night while I was out for a late dinner with my family (yes I said late because I was stuck at the office until about 9 PM). All to correct 1 TINY error that could have easily been fixed this morning.

Some of the people in this company, however, are abusive and expect me to be "on" at all times of every night. Beyond that, they basically think that I am superman, for lack of a better word, and assume I can manage to take care of 800 things at once.

I guess my real question is this: Are ALL shops like this. I know someone in research here left to go elsewhere and it actually turned out to be MORE abusive (very hard to believe). So after hearing that, I wonder if maybe you are right...Maybe the grass isn't greener and this is just the industry I chose to be in.

Also, keep in mind this is the first job I have had in the industry since graduating in May 2010.
