Investment banking in Toronto?
Inspired by the Vancouver thread, wondering if anyone can shed some insight on what investment banking is like in Toronto in terms of pay, culture, deal flow etc.

I can tell you from all my encounters with Toronto bankers they are way bigger tools than in NYC
Not sure what you're basing this off. I sell a product to bankers and speak with bankers around the globe almost daily- Sure, you run into tools here and there but to classify a whole region as "abunch of tools" is ridiculous.

Hello,
I am a high school junior interested in your industry. I currently have a tentative Co-Op position at at BB office here in Toronto. I am wondering if any of you could give me a tour of you office/bank, and give me an opportunity to see what a day in the life of a banker is like. This would be somewhat like a take-your-kid-to-work-day sort of idea. This could also be a great opportunity for me to ask questions and start networking. I would greatly appreciate any insight you have to offer.
Anyone even remotely interested in this opportunity to help out a bright eyed young go-getter, please pm me.
Thank You.

...
Because it is "extremely tentative" and I don't think it will happen. I included it in my post to show interest in banking. Also, it would not start until Feb. 2010, and have a major impact on my school class schedule. Which is why I want to spend time in the real atmosphere before I accept the position (if it even happens).
Thanks

you sound like you'd be the most annoying person to spend an entire day
Toronto-Specific Investment Banking Guides? (Originally Posted: 12/27/2015)
I was wondering, are there any resources you would recommend to help prepare for summer analyst interviews for Toronto banks? I've been going through the BIWS stuff, and since these guides are more U.S.-based, I was not sure if there were certain topics I should pay more attention to, or if certain things are not as relevant. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks.
Yeah, a Canadian DCF is totally different than whatever is in the BIWS guide. And don't let "revenue" on a Canadian accounting statement fool you...it's actually a non cash expense there.
Toronto IBD Class Size (Originally Posted: 01/09/2017)
Did some research, but could only find class sizes for NYC BB's and whatnot. Nothing on Toronto. So I was just wondering, does anyone have a ballpark/accurate idea on the intern class size of banks in Toronto?
10-15. I know one of the Big 5 is talking on 16.

Toronto 2015 Investment banking FT and Summer Internship (Originally Posted: 02/21/2015)
Hey there, I'm currently trying to transition into investment banking (prefer M&A and corporate finance), undergraduate went to UofT applied math/finance, statistics, computer science. Co-started a student club - now it's one of the biggest finance student club in school. Had an internship at Fund of fund in Toronto as a fund accountant and risk management role. Worked in IT support for a Canadian major bank for 2 years as a senior analyst position.
I have always been interested in investment banking, it fascinates me to know what is behind a deal. I completed the financial modelling courses with IBI(Investment banking institute) and have been researching intensively about the IB industry. Currently working on rebuilding my resume and networking a lot.
I'm wondering how I can better position myself if eventually working in BB investment bank is my goal? What stepping stone position might be helpful for the long run? What's the recruitment process/timeline for BB investment banks in Toronto?
Get an MBA. You're too far out of school and your work experience is not good or relevant.
Agreed with above poster.
Most common sectors - Toronto IB (Originally Posted: 12/05/2017)
Hey everyone,
Was wondering if anyone working in IB in Toronto had any information about some of the more popular sectors that most investment bank's tend to focus on?
From my understanding, many institutions focus on TMT, FIG, and M&M
Metals & Mining is big too
In terms of coverage groups, there's no difference between the industries that you'd find in the US vs Toronto. The big 5 Canadian banks have a similar coverage structure to that of US BBs. For some of the satellites/independents, usually they have a generalist coverage group under Diversified Industries, but tend to have metals & mining/NR groups due to the number of NR deals in Canada. You might find a few O&G bankers in Toronto, but most O&G deals are staffed/executed out of the Calgary office. There are a few firms that have started dedicated coverage groups for cannabis/blockchain, but as of today its more on the research side as opposed to IB(typically cannabis lumped under HC and blockchain under tech/diversified).
No SA positions want to get into IBD in Toronto..Any Advice? (Originally Posted: 03/31/2008)
I currently switched by major to Finance (I'm in my third year) and really want to get into IBD in Toronto.
I am attending a non-target school and because I just switched my major (in Feb), I missed the deadlines for the SA internships at CIBCWM and RBCCM here in Toronto (which, were all in Jan).
I was just wondering if anyone can provide me advice on the best way to get a FT in IBD for next year (May 2009).
My brother-in-law's friends are all MDs or VPs at CIBCWM and RBCCM but I don't really know if I can bank on him.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
