It wasn't a great film, and yet, it was fucking awesome.
Following the likes of other films like Peter Jackson's King Kong or Spielberg's War of the Worlds, movies about large creatures inflicting mass destruction are not new. But whereas those other films arguably put more emphasis on various elements of the film, Guillermo Del Toro decided to go all out on the visual component. To be honest, I wish he had cut out like half the fighting scenes and focused more heavily on other aspects of the film that were introduced or investigated on the surface but not explored in depth, including the sci-fi plot threads (I mean, the whole movie could have just been focused around the wormhole or two people merging memories), character development, the relationship between the characters, etc. All of these were incorporated but it just seemed a bit fragmented. It's impossible to deny though that the visuals were mind-blowing.
Thoughts?
It was awesome, but I'm biased because I watched Gundam, Big O, Evangelion, etc. when I was younger.
Agreed that they should've expanded a bit more on the sub-plots. I hope they do that in the sequel.

Lmao, that's like saying that Inception was a ripoff of eXistenZ. Even if certain basic plot elements are similar, they're separate movies. Also I've only seen like one anime movie in my life (Grave of the Fireflies), let alone an entire anime series. Comparing the two is a little ridiculous.

Doesn't sound familiar AT ALL. With that said, I give it 2.5/5 stars. +Visual treat/ - Horrendous plot. It lacks the dynamism of the show it is an homage too.
