Executive Search Firms
What is an executive search firm? Do they look for people to fill jobs and take a percentage of the salary if they get hired?
Is it anything like management consulting? What are the exit ops for this?
I am particularly looking at Spencer Stuart, and am interested in management consulting... Does anyone know anything about this company?
...seems like a headhunter for senior level professionals its nothing like the management consulting practice at MBB
I know someone who went Spencer Stuart --> HSW --> MBB
That's one data point... do a significant percentage of people at Spencer Stuart do something similar is the question
PE Executive Search Firms - Operating Partners (Originally Posted: 09/13/2010)
I'm aware that many PE shops use Executive Search firms to find quality Operating Partners (CEO, CFO, COO, etc) to plug in at portfolio companies. I'm trying to find some of the larger more prominent Search firms that are used by these PE shops. Any input on these types of firms is greatly appreciated.

Do you use the same firms to recruit at the operating partner and associate levels? Do you even recruit for associates on the operating team?
Experience with Executive Recruiters (Originally Posted: 12/18/2014)
I was recently contacted by an executive recruiter for an associate position at a BB. It’s nice to feel wanted but what can I expect? Have any of you used or been contacted an executive recruiter before? What was your experience like? Were they helpful?
Just think of it as a first round interview - if the recruiter likes you and thinks you're a good fit, you'll get passed along to their client.
They get paid commission (~20% of 1st year salary) to connect firms with candidates, and they only get paid for each position that is filled with one of their referrals.
Because of this, they'll cast a very wide net to try to talk to and meet with many prospective candidates. They'll put the most effort into candidates they think they have a good shot at placing.
They can be very helpful, just keep in mind their incentive structure. They are there to place people into a new position. So if you do anything to lead them to believe you won't do excellent in an interview, or won't accept a job if given an offer, they won't put much time or effort into lobbying for you or putting you in front of companies.
